If pugs could fly

- —Margo Costa, 45, El Paso, TX

“Saying that my dog, Pugsley, is obsessed with food is the understatement of the century. He’s a master treat manipulator and has literally taken candy from a baby, but he’s so cute that I can rarely stay angry at him…even on the day he went too far.

“It was a beautiful fall afternoon, so I took a drive through town. I had the windows down with Pugsley perched in the passenger seat, his jowls flapping happily in the breeze. As we stopped at a light, a man pulled up next to us in a convertible. I glanced over to see Pugsley staring at him with laser focus. Suddenly, I realized with horror what had caught my portly pug’s attention as the man raised a sub sandwich to his lips.

“In a split second, I heard Pugsley let out a battle cry as he hurled his loaf-like body out the window, his curly tail waving like a flag. ‘Noooooooo!’ I screamed as he flew through the air, landing on the startled man’s lap in a flurry of meat and cheese.

“Mortified, I threw my car in park, ran to the convertible and snatched up my gluttonous pug. I apologized and offered to pay for the man’s lunch, but he just laughed deeply, waved and drove off. The next stop I made: to buy a doggy seat belt!”
