First For Women

Housekeeping hiccup

- —Colleen Worth, 59, Charlotte, NC

“All my friends had been raving about how amazing Airbnb is, so for our family vacation with my kids and grandchildren, my husband, Bill, and I decided to try it. We found the perfect beach cottage with enough room for our whole crew. My husband and I were the first ones to arrive, and we were surprised to find the door unlocked.

“But the real shock awaited inside. The place was nothing like the pictures…and it was filthy! After nosing around, I found some cleaning supplies and made Bill help me as I dusted and scrubbed every surface, grumbling all the while that we should have stayed in a hotel.

“An hour later, my cell rang. It was my son asking where we were. ‘We’re at the house, where are you?’ He paused, then said, ‘No, Mom, I’m at the house. We just met the owner—you must have the wrong address!’ Suddenly, the front door swung open and a couple walked in, eyes wide with shock to see two strangers cleaning their living room. Humiliated, I waggled the feather duster and sang, ‘Free neighborhood maid service!’ then grabbed Bill and booked it out the door. My lesson: Always triple-check the address.”
