Dream escape: Islamorada
Powder-soft sand, swaying palm trees and warm breezes are what await you in this heavenly oasis
Nestled between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean lies Florida’s picturesque Islamorada, also known as the “Village of Islands.” This close-tohome paradise just 90 minutes south of Miami spreads across six of the Florida Keys and boasts seven miles of white-sand beaches, a rich history and perfect weather year-round—all the makings of the ideal holiday getaway.
Start your day by basking in the sun on the beach at Founders Park, a beloved spot for travelers and locals alike, thanks to its laid-back atmosphere and incredible amenities. “There’s a playground, grass-roof picnic shelters and a huge fitness park on-site, so there’s always something to do,” says a reviewer from Texas. “The water is also crystal-clear and perfect for swimming, with little fish dancing around your legs. We even had two manatees swim right up to us!’
To see more of Islamorada’s wildlife, rent a kayak from The
Kayak Shop and paddle through the mangroves on a two-hour tour ($45 per person). Says Maureen 2 on TripAdvisor.com, “We saw crocodiles, iguanas and nurse sharks!”
Next, head to Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park ($2.50 per person) to hike on trails near the 8-foot-high quarry walls. “The park has several short and very manageable trails or quarries you can explore,” says a reviewer from Vermont. “You see lots of coral and limestone, and there’s a very helpful visitors’ center where they offer ranger-led hikes or a guidebook for a self-guided journey.”
End your day with a stroll down Overseas Highway, where you can explore art galleries, shop for locally crafted souvenirs and dine at restaurants while admiring the sunset.
Don’t miss:
Holiday Festival
Head to Founders Park from 5–9 pm on December 7 for the 14th annual Holiday Festival. The event features a “snow mountain” made of 30 tons of snow, a 35-foot-tall Christmas tree, a sweet shop of desserts and treats and a silent auction of handcrafted ornaments. You’ll also have a chance to catch the parade at 7:30 pm, which follows this year’s theme, “Silver & Gold.”
Great day trip:
Key West
Take a 90-minute drive south to spend the day on the lively island of Key West. Once there, see the beautiful butterflies at the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, visit more than a dozen museums or relax on one of its pristine beaches.
