Dream escape: Grenada
Dazzling waters, powder-soft sand and warm breezes are what you’ll find on this heavenly island oasis
Nestled in the Caribbean Sea just north of Venezuela is the stunning island of Grenada. With thriving plantations filling the air with the soothing scents of cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla, it’s no wonder the tropical destination is nicknamed the “Island of Spice.” And its dazzling waterfalls, historic harbor capital and 40 white-sand beaches make it the perfect spot for a getaway.
Begin your escape by basking in the sun on the popular, 2-mile-long Grand Anse Beach. “Whether you want to walk, swim, snorkel, play sports, build sandcastles or enjoy a gentle stroll in paradise, this is the place for you,” says a reviewer from Illinois. “It’s peaceful, relaxing without rough currents and is occupied by amazing almond trees.”
To see the island’s underwater wonders, book a snorkeling tour with Grenada Seafaris ($75 per person).
Your first stop: the underwater sculpture garden at Molinere Bay. Says KateandRoger on TripAdvisor.com, “We saw flying fish, turtles, shoals of squid and brightly colored reef fish!”
After toweling off, head to the twoacre Palm Tree Gardens Botanical Garden. “This hidden gem is off the beaten track but well worth getting to,” says Sarah B on TripAdvisor.com. “A wonderful lush garden of carefully labelled, beautiful exotic flowers shaded by lots of different majestic palms is revealed by passionate and very knowledgeable guides. Plus an extra treat was seeing the tortoises up close and glimpsing one of the snapping turtles in the pond!”
End your day by strolling in the market square of Grenada’s capital, St. George’s, where you can shop at vendors selling fresh fruit and vegetables, handmade crafts and spices.
