Dream escape: St. John

Snow-white sand, turquoise waters and stunning sunsets are what you’ll find on this island paradise

-

Tucked away in the Caribbean Sea, directly east of Puerto Rico, is the sun-kissed island of St. John. Despite being the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John still offers more than 12,000 acres of protected national park, 18 beautiful beaches, a laid-back atmosphere and perfect year-round weather—making it the ideal fall getaway.

Begin your day by sunbathing on the lively yet picturesque Honeymoon Beach. “A trip to St. John is not complete without a day pass visit to Honeymoon Beach,” says a reviewer from Michigan. “There’s a new restaurant and bar, cabana rentals and live music. I especially loved relaxing in a hammock!”

To catch a glimpse of local marine life, head to Scott Bay Beach to snorkel. Says a reviewer from Texas, “We loved seeing all of the green sea turtles and stingrays in the water!”

After toweling off, make the 30-minute drive east to the Reef Bay Trail, a 2.2-mile-long hiking trail that winds through a shady forest filled with plants, flowers and historical landmarks. “This is one of the best hikes we have been on,” says Jen F on TripAdvisor.com. “Take your time and make your way down to the petroglyphs. Words cannot describe the carvings! They are amazing, and if you are lucky enough for the waterfall to be in action (rain-dependent), it’s even more beautiful. Take plenty of water and a snack or lunch in your pack so you can really enjoy this hike.”

End your day by embarking on a sunset cruise with Calypso Charters ($70 per adult, $65 per child). You’ll spend the evening sailing the waters of Cruz Bay while indulging in an open bar and admiring the breathtaking colors of the Caribbean sunset.

Great day trip:

St. Thomas

Take a 20-minute ferry ($12 round trip) to explore the stunning neighboring island of St. Thomas. Once there, spend the day lounging on one of the island’s 40 charming beaches, tour Blackbeard’s Castle or Fort Christian, get up close and personal with marine life at Coral World Ocean Park or try a world-famous banana daiquiri at the Mountain Top.

Don’t miss:

Annaberg Plantation

Step back in time with a visit to the ruins of the 18th-century Annaberg Sugar Plantation. Visitors will have a chance to follow a trail through the old factory, living quarters and windmill, while reading a number of informational signs about the site’s history.
