Wayfair, the online furniture retailer Shah cofounded in 2002, began the year in freefall, with more than 550 people laid off in February and shares plummeting 75% through March 19. That was enough to knock Shah and cofounder Steve Conine, worth $2.2 billion each last year, out of the billionaire ranks. But starting in late March, housebound Americans began to spend more time shopping online to upgrade their homes. Wayfair’s stock climbed more than 800% since its low as sales surged, catapulting Shah and Conine back onto The Forbes 400.
