popular events, the Annual World’s Largest Salmon BBQ, has also been canceled as large gatherings have been prohibited based on Mendocino County’s Health order. The BBQ, an annual fundraiser for the Salmon Restoration Association, would have marked its 49th celebration this Independence Day.
“Guidelines that guarantee the safety of our attendees, volunteers, vendors and community have yet to be developed for large events,” an unattributed post on the Association’s website states. “As science and associated public health policies evolve we will continue to monitor their progress as we look forward to better outcomes in 2021.”
Both the effects and the disappointment span countywide: “It’s unfortunate that we’re seeing our long-running summer events canceled but in light of the pandemic, it is the socially responsible thing to do, said Travis Scott, Executive Director of Visit Mendocino, whose position in pre-pandemic times would have been to encourage visitors to the region. “We support the health and safety of our community over the promotion of mass gatherings.”
