Golf Notes: It was a standard scramble
The Annual fund-raising Rotary Club Golf Tournament was played on the Little River
Golf Course last Saturday, October 16th. Thankfully for the tournament participants, the event was played a day before the rains came. Many commented, weatherwise, “it was one of the best days of the year.” The tournament was played to the standard scramble format each player needing to get in three drives. One wrinkle in the format was each player could buy two mulligans and use them when needed. To the non-golfer a mulligan is a do-over, a hit it again option.
I’m not sure how many mulligans the first-place team used but the 2021 Rotary Club Tournament winners were Toby Wade, Hollis Hughes, Jeff Stubbs, and Richard Carpenter. It is noted Richard Carpenter, a friend of Toby’s, is a former San Francisco Olympic Penninsula Club Champion. Nice addition to your winning team Toby. Coming in second were Bradley Theisen, Jacob Peterson, Chong Mejias, and Jeremy James. Third place was captured by Greg Burke, Jim Eldridge, Mathew Boren, and Matt Howard. Interesting to note two winning teams had former Club Champions on board, Richard
Carpenter of the Olympic Pennisula Club, Bradly Theison of the Little River Club and the thirdplace team had the 2021 contender for Club Championship Matt Howard.
Closest to the pin on hole number 2/11 was Mike Sandys and on hole number 7 closest to the hole was Little River’s own Jim Ehlers.
Long drive, measured on the third fairway, was smacked by Kathy Gibney for the women, and for the men, it was Jeremy James. The most accurate drive of the day also measured on the third fairway was hit by Mathew Boren. Congratulations to all for playing and especially congratulations to all the winners and to the Rotary Club of Mendocino. You all participated in a meaningful local fundraiser. Last year the Rotary Club provided college-bound seniors with scholarships, furnished dictionaries to third graders, books for students working at home, and support for Mendocino High School Interact and Botany Clubs. They also provided masks and meals for those in isolation due to Covid-19 and much more…trash pickup and more.
As well as providing a means to community fundraise golf also provides an opportunity for healthy exercise. Lindy Peters who played in the Rotary tournament did a full Deitz that is he
walked the entire round. Lindy reported, according to his device, he took around 14,000 steps which translates into 8.67 miles. Nice walking
Lindy.
Check swings. Lindy and I were conjecturing about the fateful 9th inning two strike check swing called a strike in the recent Giants game. Say two golfers playing a match are tied going into the 18th hole. Say Lindy is one of the players. He stands in the hitters/tee box takes his backswing starts down and is distracted by John Johansen yelling fore on the seventeenth tee. He checks his swing.
The other players say no that was a swing. Lindy loses by one stroke.
