Keepin’ things positive

-

“It’s just a wonderful day in the neighborhood…” — It’s all “Sunshine and Buttercups!” “If things were any better, I couldn’t stand It!“-I’m llivin’ the dream! “— All these sayings are great ways to keep your mind in a positive mode. The more you say them, the more they affect your attitude in a positive way. Let’s face it,, a lot of things are not going as easy as they were a few years ago. I try to make a effort to keep my glass ½ full rather than ½ empty.

With this now being our third year in a drought and many of our local waterways are still not accessible by boat. Which has been a real stinker!! So, what is a angler to do? “Roll with the punches”, I guess. With this being said, I am going to be as positive as I can with the following fishing report.

CLEAR LAKE-The truth is; the bass fishin

’at our #5 rated bass fishery over the hill has not been all that great lately. With the lake level being about 1 ½ feet lower than it was this time last year the bass are just not where they have been in the past. A lot of the bass are way out off the shore and are moving around. Bass like to hang out in and around submersed structure. There just aren’t much of anything other than a few rock files here and there. And, there are always boats on these spots.

Keeping things ½ full, well, the crappie and catfishin’ has really picked up lately. Say, speaking of catfish. Did you here aboutt he 38th Annual Catfish Derby on Clear Lake May 13-15. There will $10,000 in cash and prizes. All the details to come. Remember to mark your calendars for this date…

LAKE PILLSBURYBoy, oh boy, I have been getting many great reports about the trout and bass fishing on our lake up on the mountain. Because the water temperature is a bit cooler than Lake Mendocino the bass are just now starting to get in a spawning mode. Even though the lake is not full, it is in fair shape and there is still water up in some of the spawning grounds. I had a fellow angler tell me that they “knocked them dead” (them, being trout) trolling alone the East side of the lake. The best time to fish is by far in the morning hours. Often the wind will come up in the early afternoon. The big BUMMER is that the only road open to get in is from Lake County side. Take it real slow and easy and you’ll be just fine.

BLUE LAKES-The fishin’ on the Upper Blue Lakes has been pretty good lately, thanks to California

Department of Fish and Wildlife. Due to the strong afternoon winds, the best times to fish are the morning hours. The fishermen trolling have been doing the best. With most boats bringing in limits of beautiful trout. (Try using an action disc with a fly or worm chasing it . Set your down rigger at 20 — 25 feet.) The trout fishermen that have been fishing from the shore and off of docks have also been hooking into a few nice sized fish. (Right now, the best baits are a blown-up worm, power bait, castmaster, super duper, roostertail,& a red/gold needle fish.) But wait, don’t forget about the bass fishin’ it also has really picked up. Some anglers have been landing bass weighing in the 4 — 5 pound range.

LAKE SONOMA-Some good fishin’ reports coming out of Lake Sonoma. The fall and winter fishing has been pretty tough. But, now the bass bite is back! The main body hot spots are anywhere there are running creeks coming into the lake. Also, Yorty, Cherry, and Skunk Creeks are holding bass that are staged for spawning. The bass haven’t moved up far yet. They are hanging out near submersed timber. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits and drop shottin’ are all working well.

What makes this so neat is that there are only a handful of “smallies” that live in Clear Lake. By-the-way Lyle hooked it with a HOOTYHOOT jig. NICE JOB Brother Lyle!
