want to make a difference. This desire for impact has generated a modern workforce that is increasingly searching for a career with meaning, according to the American Psychological Association. And more than 50,000 global employees have found this purpose at AbbVie.

“Our mission is clear—to discover and deliver innovative medicines and solutions that address complex health issues and enhance people’s lives,” says Richard Gonzalez, AbbVie’s chairman of the board and CEO. “Employees find that they can align with this purpose, and it’s why we all come to work each day.”

The global, research-driven biopharmaceutical company founded in 2013 has invested more than

$63 billion in research and development to discover and deliver innovative medicines and products. Its focus is on key growth areas, where it can have the greatest potential to solve unmet needs, including immunology, neuroscience, oncology, aesthetics, and eye care. At AbbVie, how employees work together centers around the company’s “Ways We Work” culture, which consists of five core behaviors that create the environment the company needs to fulfill its mission.

“Since placing culture at the forefront of our business strategy, we’ve seen transformative increases in employee engagement and have realized our high-performance culture,” says Gonzalez. “This commitment to focus on what we do and how we do it has made AbbVie a great place to work.”

The company’s leadership relies on insights gathered from internal surveys and, as result of feedback, continues to identify and prioritize actions that have the greatest impact on its workplace and culture. This includes maintaining its strong development focus.

AbbVie encourages continuous learning at the company and offers an extensive range of development programs. Each year, more than 30,000 employees engage with learning and career resources. And recognizing the pivotal role leaders play in shaping its workplace experience, it also introduced a specialized leadership training initiative, Leading at AbbVie. This ongoing support ensures new leaders develop the skills needed to meet the organization’s high standards for performance and behaviors.

“Our journey as a company has been characterized by high expectations and a refusal to settle. As I reflect on my upcoming retirement as CEO, building our culture is one of the things I’m most proud of,” says Gonzalez. “It’s what sets AbbVie apart.” ■
