CHAPEL BY THE SEA

Originally built in 1901, the Chapel by the Sea was a schoolhous­e that was used as a church on Sundays. Today, it houses a seasonal Christian ministry and is a popular wedding spot. Open from November through April.

The refuge is especially well-known for its abundant birdlife. The best months to visit for birding are December through March, and the best time to view wildlife is during low tide when the birds are feeding on the exposed mud flats. There are trails, an education center and special events all year.

SANIBEL HISTORICAL MUSEUM AND VILLAGE

SANIBEL LIGHTHOUSE

Directions: Turn left on Periwinkle Way from

Causeway Road and continue to the eastern

tip of Sanibel Island.

Built in 1884 with a height of 102 feet, this functionin­g landmark lighthouse is an opensteel structure that cannot be entered. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it still beams an electric welcome and promises safety to all who approach by sea.
