SPIT MAY BE A HIT VACCINE!
MOSQUITO spit could be the key to developing a vaccine that prevents the next epidemic!
Scientists have known for decades that saliva from the annoying insects helps establish mosquito-borne infections and enhance their severity.
With a vaccine, the idea is to train the body’s immune system to recognize the saliva proteins and mount a response that would weaken or prevent an infection.
A trial conducted at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases used pieces of mosquito saliva protein to build a universal vaccine.
It showed the mosquito spit vaccine was safe and triggered antibody and cellular responses.
With more research, a successful vaccine could protect against all mosquitoborne diseases, including malaria, dengue, Zika, yellow fever, West Nile — and any other diseases that may emerge.
