BIZARRE BUT TRUE!
NO SLUSH here! The city
of Holland, Mich., has
more than 120 miles of
tubing under its streets
that circulate hot water
and melt winter snow! The
system uses waste heat from
power generation and can
thaw more than one inch of
the white stuff an hour.
CREEPY! Harvard University
has a book in one of its
libraries that is bound in
human skin! The book was
given by its 19th-century
French author, Arsène
Houssaye, to a doctor friend,
Ludovic Bouland, who had
it covered with skin from
the unclaimed body of a
female mental patient!
NOTORIOUS Chicago
gangster Al Capone was
involved in the killing of
more than 30 people —
including seven in the famed
1929 Saint Valentine’s Day
Massacre — but you would
not have known that from
his business card, which
announced he was a usedfurniture
dealer!
NO WONDER they call it the
Big Apple — more people
live in New York City than
in 38 of the 50 states! The
most populous borough,
Brooklyn, was a separate
municipality until 1898.
