TATTOO INK IS TAINTED!
Contains UNLISTED dangerous chemicals
TATTOOS may do more than just adorn skin as a study found 90 percent of body art ink contains dangerous compounds! Nearly one-third of Americans have indulged in the appearance-altering modification — including punk singer Machine Gun Kelly, Oscar winner Angelina Jolie and drummer Travis Barker.
But researchers at Binghamton University say some folks could be getting more than they bargained for when they let an artist use their bod as a canvas because 54 surveyed ink samples contained 45 ingredients not listed on their labels!
The most prevalent undocumented substance found was polyethylene glycol, which has been linked to organ damage — including a type of necrosis in the kidneys. Polyethylene glycol is sometimes used as a thickening agent for ease of application.
Other products contained 2-phenoxyethanol, a preservative that has been linked to nervous system dysfunction in infants.
Still others had evidence of the petrochemical propylene glycol. Experts suspect it may have been added to reduce the risk of microbial growth in open containers. However, it has previously been linked to allergic reactions that can trigger skin conditions such as eczema.
Scientists warn with tattoo inks being injected into the skin during the application process, impurities can leach into the bloodstream and spread throughout the body.
Dr. John Swierk, a chemist who led the study, says, “We’re hoping the manufacturers take this as an opportunity to reevaluate their processes, and that artists and clients take this as an opportunity to push for better labeling and manufacturing.”
