Treat Yourself to a Golf Trip in England’s Lake District

-

Lake District, England - With the reopening of Linthwaite House (https://leeucollection.com/uk) in the Lake District on 31st July, it’s time to treat yourself to a golf trip in one of England’s most popular holiday destinations that promises plenty of space and fresh air in the great outdoors. Part of the Leeu Collection, the stunning hotel in Cumbria, England has teamed up with the nearby Windermere Golf Club to offer a ‘Golfing in the Lakes’ package that combines a two-night stay at the luxury property with 18 holes of golf for two at one of Cumbria’s most delightful and scenic golf courses, and a three-course set dinner at Michelin-starred Simon Rogan’s newest restaurant Henrock.

Whilst England’s largest National Park is best known for its spectacular walks around its numerous lakes and up mountains like Scafell Pike, it is also home to almost 40 golf courses making it the ideal destination to combine hiking with a round of golf or two, with both activities giving visitors the opportunity to soak up wonderful views of the surrounding landscape.

Less than a mile from Linthwaite House, the course at Windermere Golf Club offers panoramic views over Lake Windermere and across to the distant fells. Founded back in 1891, the layout was designed by George Lowe who – at the time – was the professional at Royal Lytham & St Annes (which has hosted 11 Open Championships), a course he also created. In true moorland style, each hole at Windermere follows the gently rolling and rugged character of the local terrain to create a layout that is both charming and demanding.

Though relatively short at 5,143 yards, this par 67 course presents golfers with a quite a challenge thanks to an array of blind tee shots, several elevation changes and numerous natural hazards such as rocky outcrops, abundant bracken and copses of trees that run alongside some of the fairways.

After the rigours of golf, Linthwaite House provides a tranquil retreat and all the comforts of a five star hotel. The Conservatory, Bar and Terrace are the perfect place for a light meal or early evening drink, while admiring the breath-taking views over Windermere towards Coniston. Breakfast and dinner are served in Henrock which showcases natural, seasonal ingredients in a relaxed and elegant setting.

That hotel stands in 14 acres of landscaped private gardens, which are dotted with arresting sculptures and offer a range of outdoor pursuits such as boating and fishing on the tarn (a small lake), boules, croquet and giant chess. At the end of the day, guests retire to one of the 36 luxurious, individually-designed bedrooms for a great night’s sleep in this peaceful bolthole.

Testifying to the quality of the hotel and its golf offer, Linthwaite House has been nominated in several of this year’s Luxury Lifestyle Magazine Readers’ Travel Awards including the Best Hotel for Golf category (winners will be announced in the Autumn).

Keen golfers may wish to try several of the other golf courses in the area, such as the Harry Colt parkland course at Ulverston just 15 miles away and the highly-regarded Silloth on Solway golf course, rated by Top 100 Golf Courses as the one number course in Cumbria, that is located on the coast about a 90-minute drive from Linthwaite House.

The ‘Golfing in the Lakes’ package includes two nights’ B&B accommodation, a three-course set meal in Henrock on one night and a round of golf for two at Windermere Golf Club Rates start from £615 for two people sharing a double room; book online at https://leeucollection.com/uk or email reservations@ linthwaitehouse.com or call +44 (0) 15394 88600, quoting “Leeu Golf”.

Golf in the Wide, Open Spaces of Switzerland’s Engadine Valley

Switzerland – With overseas golf trips back on the agenda, now is the ideal time to visit the wide open spaces and crystal clear air of Switzerland’s Engadine Valley to experience a spectacular Alpine round against a backdrop of majestic mountains and expansive blue skies.

There is no better place to stay than the iconic Kulm Hotel St. Moritz (www.kulm.com) or its sister property Grand Hotel Kronenhof (www.kronenhof.com) in nearby Pontresina, two luxurious grand dames with plenty of public areas and private grounds to relax in after a round at one of the region’s three courses.

Golf has long been associated with the Kulm Hotel, which established its own historic course in 1891, making it one of the first in Switzerland. The 9-hole, par 3 meanders up and down hills, past the Olympia Bob Run and the former Olympic Stadium, through shady pine copses whilst also enjoying superb vistas over Lake St. Moritz, all just a 7 iron from the Kulm Hotel. Built at a height of 1,860 metres (among the highest in Europe), the mountainous layout makes it physically demanding, which makes the post-golf drinks on the terrace of the Chesa al Parc club house taste all the sweeter!

Meanwhile the Engadine Golf Club, the oldest golf club in Switzerland, has two courses – Samedan and Zuoz-madulain, which are a 10 and 20 minute drive respectively from the Kulm Hotel and Grand Hotel Kronenhof.

In 1893, Samedan was the first 18-hole golf course to open its doors in Switzerland. A classic, parkland course, Samedan is set mainly on the valley floor, though some gently undulating holes and greens give the course a links feel. Its broad fairways are flanked by ancient, giant larch trees, some of which are over 700 years old, whilst a host of water hazards make for a tricky golfing challenge.

Zuoz-madulain (known simply as Zuoz to the locals) opened in 2003 and was designed by the renowned Canadian golf course architect Les Furber. In contrast to the golf course in Samedan, the layout at Zuoz offers a challenging combination of undulating fairways, elevation changes and receptive greens, plus a super attractive setting as it is flanked on one side by natural thick pine forest, which has made it very popular among the golfing community.

Away from the golf courses, visitors can explore the extensive Engadine valley via its hiking routes and mountain bike paths, whilst the numerous lakes provide plenty of opportunities for a range of water sports, such as wild swimming, stand-up paddle boarding and kite surfing. After an active day outdoors, both hotels have large luxurious spas and multiple bars and restaurants in which to enjoy some welldeserved R&R.

The Kulm Hotel’s ‘Golf Break’ package starts from CHF 620 pp sharing a double room, including:

2 nights’ accommodation on a half-board basis

Complimentary green fees at the 9-hole Kulm Golf St. Moritz* 1 complimentary green fee on the 18-hole Samedan or Zuozmadulain golf courses*

Reservations can be made by phone on +41 81 836 80 00 or by e-mail on reservations@kulm.com.

Grand Hotel Kronenhof’s ‘Golf - All in One’ package starts from CH 515 pp sharing a double room, including:

2 nights’ accommodation on a half-board basis

Complimentary green fees at the 9-hole Kulm Golf St. Moritz* 1 complimentary green fee on the 18-hole Samedan or Zuozmadulain golf courses*

Reservations can be made by phone on +41 81 830 30 30 or by e-mail on reservations@kronenhof.com.

Central Oregon’s Three Top 100 Courses, Hidden Gems and Prime Summer Tee Times

BEND, OR — A prime summer tee time at the best of Central Oregon’s golf courses isn’t always a gimme. But 2020 is no ordinary year, and that presents an opportunity for golfers — a chance to beat the summer heat and enjoy the very best of Central Oregon golf however and whenever they choose.

With its 30 golf courses — including three in Golf Digest’s Top 100 and diversity in course design that is rare — Central Oregon has long been considered among the top destinations in the country for a golf trip. That is particularly true in Central Oregon’s famously mild summer when the dry, clear days of the High Desert yield average high temperatures that settle in the low-80s.

In this era of social distancing, Central Oregon’s appeal to golfers has only strengthened with courses that offer plenty of room to roam.

Anchored by its cultural hub in Bend, Central Oregon is home to championship designs spread throughout the region. That includes the PGA Tour pedigree of Sunriver Resort’s three championship golf courses, including Crosswater Club, a Golf Digest Top 100 mainstay.

It includes the accessible-to-all designs of Black Butte Ranch’s two championship designs. Central Oregon’s offerings include more Golf Digest favorites such as the Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio courses of Pronghorn Resort and the David Mclay Kidd gem of Tetherow, as well as the player-friendly design of Brasada Ranch in Powell Butte.

The options include less familiar names like Aspen Lakes Golf Course in Sisters — named by Golf Advisor as one of the country’s great hidden gems — and budget-friendly choices like Juniper Golf Course in Redmond, considered the top municipal course in Oregon.

The region’s golf product always manages to get better, too. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Black Butte Ranch has opened a new family-friendly putting course designed by John Fought, the award-winning architect who also designed the resort’s Glaze Meadow course and co-designed Crosswater. Tetherow, where Golfboards were born, added Finn Scooters to its fun mix as well as continued refinement of its links-style course. It also means exciting new places to stay, including Pronghorn’s Huntington Lodge, which opened in 2019.

Apple Valley Golf Course at Rumbling Bald on Schedule to Reopen with Champion Bermuda Greens

LAKE LURE, N.C. – Rumbling Bald, the 36-hole golf resort on stunning Lake Lure, reports its Dan Maples-designed Apple Valley Golf Course is on schedule to open later this summer featuring new Champion Bermuda greens on all 18 holes.

Apple Valley began its transition from bentgrass to the smoothrolling Bermuda grass in June. After exhaustive research and testing, Champion was selected for its superior performance profile, heat tolerance and ease of maintenance. It has speeds up to two feet faster than other ultradwarf turf cultivars as measured by a stimpmeter.

Champion Bermuda is the marquee turf product of Bay City, Texas-based Champion Turf Farms. Founded by Morris Brown in 1966, other North Carolina courses with the grass include Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte (G-12), site of the 2017 PGA Championship, and famed Pinehurst No. 2, host of the 1999, 2005, 2014 and 2024 U.S. Opens.

“Golfers are going to love putting on these greens, and my staff is going to enjoy taking care of them,” says Matt Lovell, Rumbling Bald Director of Golf Course Maintenance. “Bentgrass requires more maintenance throughout the summer, from additional water to fans. With Champion Bermuda, we’ll be able to focus entirely on the golfer experience.”

The golfer experience at one of Western North Carolina’s only 36-hole golf destinations keeps getting better with numerous enhancements to both Apple Valley and sister course, Bald Mountain. From tree removal and new landscape to E-Z-GO golf carts with USB ports, complimentary coolers and rolled towels, Rumbling Bald continues to evolve and innovate.

“Our golf courses are an invaluable amenity here at Rumbling Bald, and we’ve committed to providing guests with an outstanding playing surface from tee to green,” says General Manager Jeff Geisler. “The greens on Apple Valley are growing in nicely and we’re excited to share them with the golfing world this summer and fall.”

Rumbling Bald offers golf packages combing rounds at both courses with the resort’s 150 sparkling clean vacation rental homes, condos and studios. Ideal for social distancing, they feature golf course and mountain views. Golfers can grab to-go meals from Legends on the Lake, the resort’s casual dining restaurant on Lake Lure. And once Apple Valley reopens, so will Pinnacle Southern Kitchen, serving up comfort food favorites.

Audubon Country Club Retains “Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” Designation

Naples, Florida – Audubon Country Club in Naples, Fla. has retained its designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, an Audubon International program.

Through participation in the Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary for golf program, Audubon Country Club has been involved in numerous environmental projects, including adopting a comprehensive environmental management program focused on wildlife and habitat management; conserving energy and reducing water use; utilizing integrated pest management techniques; naturalizing areas; managing resources in an environmentally responsible manner; and outreach and education.

Audubon Country Club was first designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2008. After designation, courses must go through a recertification process every three years. Audubon Country Club is one of 900 courses in the world to be designated as a certified ACSP for Golf course.

“Audubon Country Club has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program,” said Christine Kane, CEO at Audubon International. “They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property.”

To reach certification in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP) for Golf Courses, a course must maintain a high degree of environmental quality in several areas including: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management.

Women’s Golf Day Returns To The Fairways With September 1St Event

900 venues across 52 countries took part in WGD 2019. All registered venues benefit from marketing support and resources in the lead up to the event date, including a listing on the new WGD website, which can be upgraded to a featured location if desired. The campaign’s impressive social media channels, which achieved over 30 million impressions on the virtual version of the global celebration in June, are also an important part of the marketing mix for the venues involved across the world.

This year, WGD locations and consumers are also being offered the chance to enhance their events with the addition of golf tip books, Ahead hats, beautiful custom silk scarves and WGD merchandise including a capsule collection from campaign partner; Swingdish. The collection, which is in the familiar red and white colourway of the WGD campaign, includes a branded bag, garments and accessories. These items ship worldwide and are available to order at http://www.womensgolfday.com/shop for consumers. Retailers can sign up for a wholesale account with Swingdish by registering here https://swingdish.com/pages/become-a-retailer.

Research carried out by WGD shows that the most successful event format is one that encourages new and current female golfers to take part together, across a 4-hour experience, that combines golf with a social element, such as a talk, presentation or even a drinks party. Locations vary in type from golf superstores to indoor facilities and driving ranges as well as traditional golf clubs. PGA Professionals whose facilities host WGD events will earn 2 MSR credits.

Elisa Gaudet, Founder of Women’s Golf Day explains: “Golf offers people a great opportunity to get to know one another and to feel part of a community, which is why we encourage locations to include a social element. The sense of belonging golf offers feels even more valuable right now, which is why we are keen to go ahead with an event on September 1st. Obviously not every country will be able to hold the same scale of event that they would do normally, but there are a lot of venues who are telling us that they will benefit from holding a WGD event.”

JW Marriott Marco Island Announces Significant Makeover at Award-winning Hammock Bay Golf Course.

MARCO ISLAND, FL – The JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort is excited to announce its award-winning Hammock Bay Golf Course, designed by Peter Jacobsen and Jim Hardy, is underway with a $4.8M turfgrass replacement project. The project plan is to complete in early October 2020.

This supreme new turfgrass allows for irrigation with water that has high salinity, is shade and stress-tolerant, and features a dark green vibrant color year-round.

“We are thrilled to be able to move forward with this project to provide our guests and members with a firm, hearty, and vibrant playing surface,” says General Manager of Golf, Chris Major. “Although each of our golf courses has a unique character and a distinct playing style, with the replacement of the turfgrass at Hammock Bay, we will now afford the same caliber playing surfaces at both courses. This consistency will enhance playability and the overall golf experience for our guests and Members. As one of South Florida’s premier golf destinations, we feel this improvement illustrates our commitment to provide a long-term, world-class golf product for our guests and members to enjoy.”
