Greenwich Academy tops Kent

- By David Fierro

Scoring early and often, the Greenwich Academy soccer team topped visiting Kent School, 60, on Saturday. The Gators (833) went into halftime with a 40 lead.

Senior forward Katie Goldsmith tallied two goals and two assists to ignite the Gators. She has six goals in the team’s last three games. Junior Brecon Welch scored GA’s first goal 20 seconds into the opening half.

“Katie crossed it from the right side and I was in the 6yard spot and I hit it in the left corner on a volley,” Welch said. “Everyone played really well today. Sometimes we’ve had a tough start at the beginning of games, but today we scored a lot of goals in the beginning.”

SACRED HEART GREENWICH SOCCER

Sacred Heart Greenwich was edged by visiting Miss Porter’s School, 21, on its Senior Day on Saturday.

Miss Porter’s goals came in the 35th and 52nd minutes. Amelia Sheehan’s goal in the 45th minute tied the game at 11 for Sacred Heart. Taylor O’Meara assisted on Sheehan’s tally.

Daphne Hartch made three saves in goal for Sacred Heart, which also received four saves from Megan Maloney.

“We were in the game the entire time, going tototoe with one of the best teams in New England, so this performance gives us a lot of confidence going into next week’s FAA games,” Tigers coach Stuart Smith said. “It was our Senior Day, so I’m happy we were able to produce such a strong performance for them today, because they’ve given so much to our program.”

GREENWICH GIRLS SWIMMING

The Cardinals added another convincing win to their ledger, swimming past St. Joseph, 11763, on Saturday in Trumbull.

Junior Julia Lucey was the 100 butterfly winner (1:05.56) for Greenwich. In the 100 freestyle, GHS junior Lilly Bjerke touched the wall first in 54.82 seconds.
