Glenville

Supporters of the Children’s Learning Centers of Fairfield County went “golfing for a cause” recently at the Tamarack Country Club in Glenville.

The fifth annual golf outing was a benefit for the CLC, a centerbased early childhood education nonprofit based in Stamford. The proceeds of the outing will support its students and programs.

More than 100 golfers and supporters were on hand for the event, which was chaired by David Kooris and hosted by Tim Oberweger. More than $100,000 was raised through the golf outing and the silent and live auctions.

“Children’s Learning Centers of Fairfield County plays a critical role in helping and educating children and their families in our community,” said Marc Jaffe, the nonprofit’s CEO. “We are appreciative of our sponsors and golfers who participated in our annual golf outing. It was a fun day on the course, and we raised critical funds to support CLC’s extensive ongoing efforts for our community.”

According to the nonprofit, CLC is committed to providing early childhood education for all families, with direct services and programs focused on health, nutrition and family support for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years. For more information, visit www.clcfc.org.

Backcountry

The Round Hill Association, a backcountry homeowners association, is holding a virtual candidate debate from 7 to 8:45 p.m. Oct. 26 between the candidates for the Board of Selectman in the Nov. 2 election.

In the race for first selectman, Republican incumbent First Selectman Fred Camillo will debate Democratic challenger Bill Kelly.

Camillo, a former state representative, is seeking his second term as Greenwich’s top elected office. Kelly is a former member of the Representative Town Meeting, Board of Education and Board of Estimate and Taxation. Selectwoman Lauren Rabin, an incumbent Republican, will debate Democratic challenger Janet Stone McGuigan. Rabin, a former member of the Board of Education, is also seeking her second term. McGuigan is a current member of the RTM.

They will not be included in the debate, but short statements will be read from the candidates running for tax collector and town clerk. Incumbent Town Clerk Carmella Budkins is not running for reelection. The race for that open seat is between Republican Jackie Budkins and Democrat Molly Saleeby. Incumbent Republican Tax Collector Heather Smeriglio is running for reelection against Democratic challenger Trevor Crow.

The debate will be held via Zoom. To register to receive the link, visit https://conta.cc/3j3l0VR/ .

The League of Women Voters of Greenwich held its debate for the Board of Selectmen last week, and several more events are planned. The league is cohosting a debate for the Board of Education candidates on Tuesday with the PTA Council and the Greenwich Alliance for Education. And a debate for the candidates for the Board of Estimate and Taxation will be held on Oct. 27.

Those debates will also be held over Zoom. For more information, including how to register and to read the league’s voter guide, visit www.lwvgreenwich.org.

The election will be held Nov. 2. For information about polling places, absentee ballots and how to register to vote, visit www. greenwichct.gov/582/VoterRegistration.

The deadline to register to vote is at 8 p.m. Oct. 26, but there will be a limited voter registration session from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 1.

Glenville

District 9 of the Representative Town Meeting is looking for candidates to step forward to serve during the upcoming new term.

Only the October and December meetings remain for the current RTM. The Nov. 2 election will determine the members for the new term.

But in District 9, only 16 candidates are running for the 20 available spots.

The district is putting out the word to anyone who might be interested in serving on the RTM.

A candidate must be a registered voter in Greenwich and live within District 9, which includes Glenville, Pemberwick, the West Lyon Farm area, Bailiwick and other surrounding neighborhoods. The RTM is a nonpartisan body so party affiliation is not a factor.

The ballot for the municipal election is set, but residents can still run as writein candidates for the RTM. Residents can go to the Town Clerk’s Office at Town Hall to get the form to be recognized as a write-in candidate or get the form online at www.greenwichct. gov/721/RepresentativeTown-Meeting-RTM.

District 9 Chair Betsey Frumin said anyone who is interested can contact her directly by email at Betsey@Nacca.com or by phone at 203-531-7203.

The RTM approves the town’s municipal budget, considering nominations to town boards and commissions, initiates and amends ordinances and reviews proposals for municipal improvements in town.

“Because of our size, 230 members, we truly represent the town,” Frumin said. “Please consider joining the RTM so your voice can be heard.”

The deadline for filing to become a write-in candidate is 4 p.m. Nov. 1.

Old Greenwich

The town is prepping for Halloween this year, including the return of the annual Trunk or Treat event at the First Congregational Church of Greenwich.

The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 24 in the parking lot of the church at 108 Sound Beach Avenue in Old Greenwich. It is offered as a safe, supervised alternative to trick or treating. Children and their parents from all over the community are invited.

For Trunk or Treat, vehicles are parked and decorated, with the trunks filled with candy for trick-or-treaters to enjoy.

The event began in 2018, but it was canceled last year due to COVID-19. This year, First Selectman Fred Camillo is encouraging residents to take part fully, but safely, in Halloween events.

“We are very excited for the safe return of this community event,” said the Rev. Patrick Collins, senior pastor at First Church. “We look forward to seeing all the creative trunks and costumes.”

Since this is an outdoor event, Collins said masks are optional, but participants will be asked to practice social distancing.

The church is seeking more volunteers who will bring their decorated cars to the event. To sign up, visit https://bit.ly/3j2e7Ea. Registration is not required for trick-or-treaters, but they may sign up if they wish.

Admission is $10 per family. The proceeds will benefit a local charity that will be determined by the church’s Outreach Committee. For more information, visit www.fccog.org.

Central Greenwich

The Junior League of Greenwich, which is looking for new members, will be accepting applications through Oct. 19.

The new class of “empowered and engaged” women volunteers will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in-person and virtually. They will work over the next 10 months on what the league called a “robust curriculum” that will “serve as a springboard for community impact.”

To apply, visit www.jlgreenwich.org and fill out an application. Information about the league and its programs are available at the website.

“The Junior League is comprised of an accomplished and skilled group of volunteers who cast a wide net and leave an indelible mark on the community,” said Karen Richard, the league’s president. “Come and be a part of the legacy. We are better together.”

The nonprofit Junior League offers women training for community service; board training and leadership development for nonprofits; fundraising skills and event planning; and a chance to work with community partners and other local women interested in community service.
