SHU takes down Duquesne

FAIRFIELD — Malik Grant carried it 34 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns and Sacred Heart controlled the second half en route to a 31-13 win over Duquesne on Saturday.

The Pioneers (5-3, 3-1 Northeast Conference) took a 14-13 lead in the third quarter when Grant went up the middle for a 6-yard touchdown. He capped the scoring with a 1-yard plunge in the fourth.

The Dukes (4-2, 2-1), who entered as the last unbeaten team in the league, led 13-7 at the half but did not pick up a first down in the second half and had 24 yards of offense.

Sacred Heart had 17 of its 28 first downs in the second half and 213 of its 416 yards of total offense.

Garrett Owens ran for 113 yards and scored Duquesne’s only touchdown.

LIU 30, CCSU 13: At New Britain, Camden Orth passed for two touchdowns, Paul Inzerillo made three field goals and Long Island University beat Central Connecticu­t for its first victory of the season.

CCSU pulled within 23-13 with 8:13 left in the fourth quarter, but LIU answered with a 12-play, 76-yard drive capped by Kevin Wilson’s 23-yard run. The drive took six-plus minutes off the clock.

Orth was 14 of 26 for 146 yards for Long Island (1-5, 1-2 Northeast Conference). Wilson finished with 32 yards on four carries.

Long Island turned it over on its first two drives, but took a 10-6 lead in the second quarter on Orth’s 8-yard connection with Derick Eugene.

Inzerillo’s long of 47 yards gave LIU a 16-6 lead, and Orth’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Owen Glascoe made it 23-6 late in the third.

Shon Mitchell was 20 of 38 for 201 yards with one touchdown and one intercepti­on for Central Connecticu­t (1-6, 1-2). Tyshaun James caught six passes for 113 yards and a score.

Trinity 35, Colby 12: At Watervilll­e, Maine, despite trailing by its largest deficit of the season at halftime, the Bantams put up 35 unanswered second-half points for its sixth-straight win.

The Bantams (6-0) travel to Williams College next Saturday to take on the unbeat Ephs. The loss dropped Colby to 2-4.

The Bantams struggled to get anything going offensivel­y in the first half, punting the ball three times and also handing the football over to Colby on a fumble.

Things began to click for Trinity in the second half when quarterbac­k Spencer Fetter capped off a nineplay drive on a 1-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Jack Barrett.

Fetter completed 27 of 33 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns. Kirby ran for 139 yards and a score on 24 carries. DeVante Reid led the Blue and Gold with nine receptions and 113 receiving yards.

Wesleyan 24, Middlebury 0:

At Middletown, David Estevez ran for 140 yards on 22 carries including two touchdowns and completed 11-of-22 passes for 125 yards to lead the unbeaten Cardinals to their New England Small College Athletic Conference win.

Estevez scored on touchdown runs of 5 and 18 yards. Charlie McPhee had 29 carries for 128 yards for Wesleyan (6-0).

In the fourth quarter, Middlbury quarterbac­k Will Jergen was sacked in the end zone and fumbled the ball. Joe Flinn recovered the fumble in the end zone for Trinity’s third touchdown.with 9:24 to go.

Middlebury falls to 1-6.
