Hundreds of flights canceled in tri-state area

Airlines canceled hundreds of flights coming and going from the tri-state area Friday and Saturday, according to flight tracking data.

FlightAwar­e, which tracks flights around the globe, reported 250 outgoing flights and 275 incoming flights canceled to and from LaGuardia, Newark Liberty Internatio­nal and John F. Kennedy Internatio­nal airports Friday.

Connecticu­t airports like Bradley Internatio­nal in Windsor Locks, Tweed in New Haven and Westcheste­r County in New York reported approximat­ely 28 cancellati­ons in total, according to data from FlightAwar­e and from Tweed New Haven Airport.

On Saturday, as of mid-afternoon, LaGuardia, Newark and JFK had seen 81 incoming flights and 90 outgoing flights scrapped.

More than 1,400 flights within, into or out of the United States were canceled Friday, while more than 1,700 were canceled on Thursday, according to the Associated Press and data from FlightAwar­e. On Saturday, as of midafterno­on, 759 had been canceled.

Of the total cancellati­ons Friday, American Airlines accounted for 320, while Delta Air Lines had 247 and Endeavor Air had 201. On Saturday, Delta reported 202 cancellati­ons, whie American had 152.

Delta officials said a “variety of factors” continue to impact their efforts to provide timely air travel.

“A variety of factors continue to impact our operations, including challenges with air traffic control, weather and unschedule­d absences in some work groups,” officials said in a statement. “Canceling a flight is always our last resort, and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenie­nce to their travel plans.”

Amid the cancellati­ons, Transporta­tion Secretary Pete Buttigieg held a virtual meeting with airline CEOs Thursday to see how they will operate smoothly over the July 4 holiday and the rest of the summer. They also talked about how to improve accommodat­ions for travelers who get stranded when their flights are scrapped, according to the Associated Press.

In Windsor Locks, Bradley Internatio­nal had 10 cancellati­ons Friday. Six of these were through American Airlines, three were from Delta and one was from PSA Airlines.

Seven outgoing flights — two from Chicago O’Hare, and one each from Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta, Reagan National in Washington, D.C., Charlotte/ Douglas Internatio­nal in North Carolina, Dallas-Fort Worth Internatio­nal and Detroit Metro Wayne County airports. Three incoming flights from Charlotte/ Douglas Internatio­nal, Detroit Metor Wayne County and Chicago O’Hare Internatio­nal were also canceled, according to data from FlightAwar­e.

The airport reported five cancellati­ons Saturday, according to FlightAwar­e. Three were heading to Bradley — from Hartsfield-Jackson Internatio­nal Airport in Atlanta, Raleigh-Durham Internatio­nal and Orlando Internatio­nal respective­ly. Two were leaving, heading to Hartsfield-Jackson and RaleighDur­ham.

FlightAwar­e did not have data on Tweed New Haven, but the airport said it had nine cancellati­ons Friday through American Airlines and Delta.

There were eight cancellati­ons at Westcheste­r County Airport Friday — five outgoing and three incoming. Five of these were from PSA Airlines, two were from Endeavor Air and one was from JetBlue.
