Greenwich Academy stretches unbeaten streak to five games

Greenwich Academy stretched its unbeaten streak to five games by registerin­g a 3-1 win over visiting Hopkins School Wednesday in a rematch of the last two FAA Tournament finals.

Juniors Katie Goldsmith and Tessa Brooks helped propel the Gators to victory. Goldsmith tallied twice, while Brooks recorded one goal and one assist.

“Both teams were up for this game, it was a really tough game,” said GA coach Alistair Lonsdale, whose squad raised its record to 7-2-1.

GA, which beat Hopkins for the FAA Tournament title the past two seasons, took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. Smith scored the go-ahead goal, with Brooks assisting on the tally.

“We had three other good chances of scoring that we missed, but we were up, 3-1, at halftime,” Lonsdale said.

Gathering a pass from senior Paige Keating, Goldsmith scored again 20 minutes into the second half, putting the Gators on top, 2-0. With six minutes remaining, junior Taylor Lane tallied off a Brooks corner kick, giving Greenwich Academy a 3-0 advantage.

Hopkins (5-4-1) scored with two minutes left in the second half, cutting GA’s lead to 3-1. Sophomore Ella Fugelsang got the shutout in goal for the Gators, who were once again sparked defensivel­y by sophomore Schuyler Sargent and Christina Maldonado.

Greenwich Academy returns to action Monday against visiting Masters School.

“Our team was tired defensivel­y and worked really hard,” Lonsdale said. “We’ve had a stretch of tough games, so it was good to come out on top.”

GREENWICH HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SOCCER

Getting goals from five different players, the Cardinals notched a 5-0 road win over Wilton in an FCIAC game held on Wednesday.

Greenwich (6-2-3) scored three times over the first 14 minutes of play. Junior Davi Pedreiro’s unassisted goal in the third minute gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

Senior Daniel Bourgeois tallied in the fifth minute, making it 2-0. Shoki Araki, a senior, assisted on the goal. Joao Lima, a freshman, gave GHS a 3-0 lead in the 14th minute, while senior Rodane McKenzie added a goal in the 52nd minute. Seniors Thomas Streiff and Christophe­r Cruz were each credited with assists on McKenzie’s tally.

Senior Kai Jennings sealed the scoring in the 68th minute, with senior Daniel Ubal Barrientos setting him up for the tally. The Cards host Bridgeport Central Friday at 6 p.m.

BRUNSWICK WATER POLO

Brunswick dropped a17-14 decision to Loomis Chaffee on the road Wednesday, a loss snapping the Bruins’ 32-match NEPSAC winning streak in regularsea­son play. The streak began following a 6-5 setback against Suffield Academy on October 3, 2015, coincident­ally at Loomis Chaffee.

Using a shuffled line-up, Brunswick’s was led by Dillon Robinson’s five goals. Vilas Vilas Srikrishna­n and Ivey Gehring each scored three goals, while Luke Apostolide­s tallied twice and Ned Camel added one goal.

Up next for the Bruins is the Cardinal Cup, hosted by Greenwich High School. The Bruins will send two teams to the 12-team, twoday event that begins on Friday.

GREENWICH HIGH GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Visiting Trumbull rallied to defeat Greenwich, 3-2, in an FCIAC match held on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles improved to 8-3 overall and 7-2 in FCIAC play. The Cardinals’ record stands at 8-4 overall and 7-3 in the conference.

Trumbull won the match, 22-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-20, 16-14. Senior Carolina Lew registered 10 digs, eight service points and four aces to pace Greenwich.

Erin O’Keefe, a senior, had nine kills, while freshman Adele Sotgiu added 11 kills, eight digs and eight service points for the Cardinals. Senior Gia Alfano had seven kills for four digs for GHS.

“It was a great, hardfought match between two good teams,” Cardinals coach Steve Lapham said.

Krystina Schueler registered a team-high 17 kills to lead Trumbull. Rachel Hage tallied 15 digs and 10 assists, while Ashleigh Johnson had 11 digs for the victors. Greenwich hosts Westhill on Friday.
