Petersen named Greenwich coach

-

The Greenwich High School wrestling team will have a new leader on the mat, as Cardinals Athletic Director Gus Lindine recently named Jere Petersen as the program’s new coach.

Petersen replaces Greg Domestico, who resigned after coaching the Cardinals for three seasons. Domestico took over the helm from George Albano in 2015.

A graduate of Columbia University, where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams, Petersen began coaching at Stuyvesant High School in New York City. As the school’s varsity wrestling coach from 1991-1994, Petersen guided the team to a 58-14 record, with two division titles, while finishing in the top three of the Public School Athletic League each season.

Besides coaching wrestling, he was defensive coordinator of the school’s football team, helping lead them to a 27-16-1 record and a division title. From there, Peterson went on to coach football at Pace where he coached three Division II All-Americans and five All-Conference linebackers.

Petersen enjoyed a successful youth and scholastic wrestling career. As a member of the National Team Champion Sacramento Super Stars, he won two national titles.

He qualified for the 1980 U.S. Schoolboy and 1982 Cadet Freestyle National Teams, winning a silver medal at the Schoolboy World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden. While wrestling at Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks, Calif., Petersen was an all-state performer. He was also a member of the California Junior National Freestyle Team and was a two time U.S. Western Regional Freestyle Champion.

“He has a wealth of experience as a high school and collegiate wrestler and as a high school coach,” Lindine said of Petersen. “He is enthusiastic conscientious and excited about joining the Greenwich Cardinals. He can’t wait to get started.”

Currently, Petersen also coaches wrestling with the Stamford Junior Warriors, Scofield Magnet Middle School.
