Greenwich High School to hold legislature debate

GREENWICH — Voters in Greenwich will have one more chance to hear from their state legislature candidates — with the questions coming this time from the town’s youth.

All of the candidates are scheduled to take part in an Oct. 30 debate, with students from Greenwich High School writing and asking the questions and serving as the timers.

The debate, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Greenwich in partnership with the GHS We The People program, will be broadcast via Zoom.

The slate of candidates scheduled to take part are, in the 36th Senate District, Democratic state Sen. Alex Kasser and Republican challenger Ryan Fazio; in the 149th House District, Republican candidate Kimberly Fiorello and Democratic candidate Kathleen Stowe; in the 150th

House District, incumbent Democratic state Rep. Stephen Meskers and Republican challenger Joe Kelly; and in the 151st House District, incumbent Republican state Rep. Harry Arora and Democratic challenger Hector Arezno.

The 52-minute debate is slated to begin at 1:54 p.m. Oct. 30.

Due to coronavirus restrictions and the need for social distancing, the debate will not be held in person. Students will watch the Zoom stream from their classrooms and the candidates will speak from their homes.

All of the candidates also took part in a debate at Town Hall that was broadcast over Zoom. The full video of that debate is available at the league’s website and on the YouTube page for Greenwich Community Television Channel 79. Fiorello and Stowe also took part in an online debate held by the Round Hill Association.
