Commercial building approved for east end of Greenwich
GREENWICH — A new medical and retail building is set to rise on East Putnam Avenue at the border with the city of Stamford.
The Greenwich Planning and Zoning Commission on Tuesday gave site-plan approval, with conditions attached, to a plan to build a new commercial structure at 1549 E. Putnam Ave., the site of a former animal hospital.
The structure lies within the Stamford city line, but the driveway falls under the Greenwich town jurisdiction. The Planning and Zoning Commission was responsible for approving the driveway, front parking and landscaping aspect of the application by 1549 East Putnam Avenue LLC.
The proposed structure would be three stories with about 3,000 square feet of space. The current building off Whitmore Lane, a two-story building measuring about 1,000 square feet of space, would be demolished. The application states that medical offices and retail space would be housed in the new building.
The application will go to the town’s Architectural Review Committee. The planning commission requested that the development team work on the lighting issues and the plantings plan with ARC.
There was no public comment on the application, and the site-plan approval was granted unanimously.
Commission Chairwoman Margarita Alban said she wanted the landscaping and plantings to be as attractive as possible, given the site is a “gateway” to the town of Greenwich. She called it “a huge opportunity” for the east end of town.
“We’ll let the ARC work on it,” she said, noting that members of the committee have expertise on landscaping issues and the design goals for the east end of Greenwich.
The new building did not require any special approvals from the city of Stamford, according to the attorney representing the proposal, John Tesei. The Stamford portion of the property is listed at 2061 W. Main St. Tesei said the developers would work on the lighting and landscaping plan with the ARC.
