‘As Trump’s World Turns’

- Don Hermann is a Greenwich resident and author of “What is the Meaning of Life? (And 92 other things I don’t have answers to).”

The devil is in the details. He’s pulling your strings like a fiddle. Or if you prefer, you’re a pawn in his chess match. He wants to be king but it doesn’t seem to be working, with the exception of his influence with Republicans in Congress.

His priorities are very clear. He’s buying time, support and attention. These three areas converge for one reason. Prevent the Diabolical Man from going to jail.

They’re part of a soap opera. A show. With extreme ups and downs. The script is controlled by him. You have to stay tuned in to be current. That’s part of the deal.

Chaos rules. Keep people on their toes. It holds their interest. Outrageous statements. Predictions. Name-calling. Tactics George Steinbrenner told Donald Trump to follow. Whatever you do, or say, positive, negative, your goal is to get on page 1, not the back page. That buys him the time, the attention. And helps reinforce the support he craves.

He has lied more than 20,000 times during his presidency. He’s made outrageous claims that he’s the best or most authoritative in areas he knows very little about or has attacked. He’ll overrule scientists, generals and other experts with dire consequences.

He has surrounded himself with sycophants and people with limited abilities for their particular positions. Threats are part of his agenda.

He has his finger on the pulse of the media. They dance to his tune. It has paid off. TV stations hanging on by their fingernails a few years ago are stocked with champagne and caviar. Trump morning, noon and night. Newspapers can’t get enough. The soap opera works in all venues.

Professors and religious leaders have come out of the walls feasting on “The Trump Show” as they appear on TV and author books and stuff the pockets of struggling publishers. It’s an industry.

Who doesn’t have strong feelings about him? People can’t wait for tomorrow’s news to stay current. It’s making the soap opera “As the World Turns” come back “As Trump’s World Turns.”

He’s made enemies of friends. And friends of enemies. He’s broken promises about health care. Four years and no new plan. Despite his promises. it looks like preexisting conditions are going to be in the sick bay. How often has he said no cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid? Check your bank account soon.

How do you describe his lack of attention and mishandling of COVID-19?

Fodder for the gurus. He’ll even take that bad news over talk of his possible legal problems. More episodes for the soap opera.

His loss in the election is useful to get audiences to hang on every word and every action. Look what he’s doing to our country.

As egregious as his apparent civil and legal misdeeds, his goal is to get the support of his enormous base to carry him through the upcoming events as he leaves office. He needs them to believe that he couldn’t possibly be guilty of the accusations brought by those socialists. They’re just out to get him.

Why not continue the soap opera after he leaves office? The perfect platform to stay top of mind with all audiences. He could still dominate the news from outside of Washington. And build on his name. Profitably. Diabolical Donny is busy at work. Who will object? The media?
