KEEP AN EYE ON

Shaking off the rust: UConn had to quarantine for 14 days from Nov. 5-19, meaning it’s only been back to practice for less than a week. The Huskies did their best to keep in shape during the shutdown, even working out on the field hockey field. But there’s only so much a team can do as a full unit, away from the basketball court, to stay sharp and keep in shape for two weeks. Suffice to say, the Huskies may be a bit rusty on Wednesday night.

“It’s gonna be choppy,” coach Dan Hurley predicted. “It’s not always gonna be pretty, but we’ve got to be tough, we’ve got to defend, and our culture’s got to have to carry us.”

Rotation situation: With so much talent and depth but so much of it unproven, either as transfers or freshmen or coming off injury, it will be fascinating to see what starting lineup Hurley goes with and, more importantly, what kind of rotations and player combinations he utilizes.

He wasn’t about to reveal anything on Tuesday, however, saying only that players had started separating themselves and emerging as top-rotation players just before the shutdown hit.

“They’ve had since Thursday to establish themselves into roles,” said Hurley. “I think we have a good plan going into (Wednesday night). Guys have earned where they are.”

Health check: Hurley said the team is in good shape, health-wise. Tyler Polley, who suffered a season-ending ACL tear in January, has been fully participating in practices for a while now, and the senior forward said he is “100 percent” and has no limitations.

Brendan Adams, who missed a good stretch of preseason practice time with a foot injury, should be good to go on Wednesday.

The only player who won’t be available is Akok Akok, who suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon in February. Still, the 6-foot-9 sophomore has been involved in 5-on-5, halfcourt action and could progress to fullcourt action next week. His recovery, in fact, has been “remarkable,” according to Hurley.

“It’s kind of startling,” the coach said. “I didn’t think, at this point, that he would be doing the things athletically that he’s doing.”
