STAMFORD — An attempted street robbery escalated into a home invasion when two men trying to rob a man in front of his West Side apartment followed the fleeing victim into his home and assaulted and robbed the man’s roommate, police said.

A 21-year-old man was standing in front of his Dryden Street apartment smoking a cigarette just before 10:27 p.m. Sunday when two men began accosting him, Lt. Tom Scanlon said.

The victim said he could feel the two suspects trying to go through his pockets, Scanlon said. The man broke free and ran into his second floor apartment, with the two robbers close on his heels, he said.

The man’s 47-year-old roommate heard the commotion and opened the door to his bedroom, Scanlon said. At that point, the two men assaulting him and took some of his possessions before fleeing, he said.

Nothing was taken from the man smoking the cigarette, Scanlon said.

Both of the victims needed treatment for minor cuts, scrapes and bruises to their faces, police said.

The two suspects were described as tall, black and wearing dark clothing and medical-type masks , Scanlon said.

This is the second home invasion reported in Stamford over the past three weeks, police said. On Nov. 22, an armed intruder broke into a North Stamford home and stole a car, police said.

That incident happened on Echo Hill Drive, and the two elderly residents were unharmed, police said. No arrest have been made in the case, police said. Scanlon said there was nothing more to add about that ongoing investigation.
