NE-10 cancels winter sports, championships

- STAFF REPORTS

The Northeast-10 Conference Council of Presidents voted Tuesday to cancel formal regular season and postseason championship competition due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a release from the conference.

The NE-10 includes the University of New Haven and Southern Connecticut State University.

The decision impacts the following winter sports: men’s and women’s basketball, indoor track & field, and swimming & diving, as well as men’s ice hockey.

Each NE10 member institution shall retain the autonomy to determine if it will engage in independent athletic contests this winter, according to the release.

Team activities, practice and training opportunities and contests against outside competition will be determined and defined by each member institution, according to the release, but shall adhere to NCAA policies and state public health regulations.

The NE10 also includes Adelphi, AIC, Assumption, Bentley, Franklin Pierce, Le Moyne, Pace, Saint Anselm, Saint Michael’s, Saint Rose, Southern New Hampshire and Stonehill.

The Council of Presidents and the entire NE10 community continue to work extensively in its prioritization of health and safety in its decision-making process in determining a return to competition.

The Conference said it remained “committed to supporting a return to play for NE10 competition in its 10 spring sports, whose 2020 seasons were cancelled at the outset of the pandemic.”

A decision regarding the resumption of fall sports has not been made, and is expected in January.

BOBCATS BREAK INTO TOP 10

Quinnipiac women’s hockey broke into the top 10 in the USA Today/USA Hockey poll on Tuesday, and the Bobcats remain among those also receiving votes in the U.S. College Hockey Online top-10 poll. The rankings included Sunday’s seasonopening 6-1 win over Sacred Heart but not Monday’s 9-1 victory over the Pioneers. Sunday’s win was the 100th for coach Cassandra Turner (101-62-23). The men’s team dropped one spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey poll this week and now sits 11th in both. Those polls came in before the Bobcats opened their season with a 9-2 win over Sacred Heart on Monday.
