KEEP AN EYE ON

On guard: Who’s UConn’s next Gabby Williams or Kia Nurse? More specifically, who, if anyone, on this season’s team can be trusted to singlehandedly shut down the opponent’s best player?

The Huskies may get some answers Tuesday when they visit Villanova. Sophomore forward Maddie Siegrist, the reigning Big East freshman of the year, already has two 30-point games this season and ranks 11th in the country with 24.4 points per game.

“We have to identify who can shut down somebody on the other team without needing help every time down the floor,” UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. “I don’t know that we’ve identified that yet. I don’t know that we just put Gabby on her or put Kia on her or put Moriah Jefferson on her. I don’t know that we have the ability to do that at this particular time.”

It will be the fifth game in 11 days for UConn before a weeklong break for the holidays.

Passing grade: The Huskies matched their season-high with 26 assists in Saturday’s win over Xavier, and are averaging 22.8 per game, which ranks second to only Baylor.

“The one thing that is significantly better than last year is we are a much better passing team,” Auriemma said. “That creates more opportunities for everybody. We’re able to use the whole court. We get rid of the ball quickly. We have a team that’s willing to pass the ball. That’s somewhat unusual in today’s day and age.”

Quick starter: Denise Dillon has matched her predecessor, Harry Perretta, who retired in March after 42 years at the helm, for most wins to start a career at Villanova. The Wildcats (7-0) are the only remaining unbeaten team in the Big East besides UConn.

History lesson: UConn has won the last 10 meetings and is 36-17 all-time against Villanova. The teams last played on Jan. 29, 2013, a 76-43 Huskies victory in Hartford.
