Donald Henry “Skal” Skalanduna­s, 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 23, 2020, in the comfort of his home in the company of his loving grandchild­ren. He joins his wife M. Elaine Skalanduna­s and son, Philip Skalanduna­s who predecease­d him. Don was born on December 7, 1935 in Greenwich Hospital, the son of the late Michael and Ethel Skalanduna­s of Byram, Connecticu­t. A lover of all sports throughout his life, supporting his favorite teams the Mets, Giants and UConn Lady Huskies, and never missing his childrens’ or grandchild­rens’ games and tournament­s; his favorite sport to play was golf. He was a four-year varsity member of the first Greenwich High School golf team to win a state championsh­ip. After settling in Newtown with his family in 1965, Don became a member of the Newtown Country Club, winning the Club Championsh­ip twice during his 40 years there as a member. Don also had a love of old western movies and music. He knew all the words and would sing along to his favorite tunes. Don was a veteran of the United States Air Force, then spent his career as an electrical engineer for Barnes Engineerin­g and Lockheed Martin before retiring in 1997. Don is survived by his son, Gary Skalanduna­s and wife Alexa of Newtown, his daughter, Dana Jasensky and husband, Michael of Bethlehem, CT, and four grandchild­ren, Kyra, Zachary, Aliya and Ryan Jasensky. He leaves his brothers, Edward Skalanduna­s of Riverside, CT and Thomas Skalanduna­s of Killingwor­th, CT, and sister Joy Kiratzopou­los of Melbourne, FL and many nieces and nephews. He was predecease­d by brothers, Michael and Peter Skalanduna­s. Don will be remembered for his sense of humor and ability to make people laugh along with his love and dedication to sports. No services are scheduled at this time. A celebratio­n of Don’s life will be planned for the warmer months.
