Police: Truck hit bridge on Greenwich-N.Y line

- By Robert Marchant

The bridge in New York state on the Greenwich border that has been hit more times than any other bridge in the state added another strike to its tally Tuesday morning, according to police.

The truck hit the King Street bridge where the Hutchinson River Parkway becomes the Merritt Parkway at the Greenwich border around 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Westchester County Police Department.

The county police spent several hours investigating the crash, which occurred on the northbound lanes in Rye Brook, N.Y., and workers were seen cleaning up dozens of cans of Kickstart energy drink that the truck spilled out across the roadway.

The Greenwich Fire Department was notified of the crash but did not send any units, said Deputy Fire Chief Keith Millette, because the incident took place on the New York side of the border.

Traffic was snarled on the northbound side of the Hutch due to the crash, and all lanes were closed for much of the morning and early afternoon on Tuesday, police said. No serious injuries were reported.

The span has been clipped by trucks nearly 150 times in the last 10 years, according to police. The low-slung bridge can’t accommodate tall trucks, which are banned from the roadway. Only passengers cars are allowed to drive on the Hutchinson River Parkway as it leads into the Merritt Parkway in Connecticut.

New technology features were added to the parkway in 2019 to alert inattentive truckers that they are approaching a hazard, which cut down the number of strikes, but the system in not fool-proof.
