GREENWICH — Since September, Greenwich Public Schools have recorded more than 600 cases of COVID-19.

As of Tuesday, there have been 605 total cases since the start of school, amid a recent spike driven by a cluster of cases at Greenwich High School that left the girls’ and boy’s lacrosse teams and the baseball team in quarantine. There are 10 new cases since last Friday.

Sixteen positive cases were reported at Greenwich High last Thursday, according to the district, and more than 100 students and staff member were forced to quarantine, just a day before spring break was set to start.

The break extends through Friday. And, despite concerns expressed by some educators and similar decisions in other, nearby districts, Superintendent of Schools Toni Jones has not expressed a need to implement a week of remote learning as students and staff return from vacation next week. Addressing the district’s biggest surge in cases of the year last week, Jones and the district’s Head of Nursing Mary Keller said a remote week likely would not be needed because teacher absenteeism does not appear to be an issue.

“A strong factor of going fully remote is if we do not have the staff to teach our students,” they said. “Currently, teacher absenteeism is at a normal level and therefore would not require us going fully remote.”

As of Tuesday there were 44 active cases in the district affecting 11 schools. With 15 active cases, Greenwich High still has, by far, the highest concentration of the virus. Last Friday, the school had 19 active cases.
