Applebee’s, looking to hire 10,000 new employees nationwide, is hosting a National Hiring Day event with an extra incentive — free appetizers.

The restaurant chain’s new “Apps For Apps” program is part of the May 17 event, and every candidate 18 years or older who receives an interview will receive a voucher for a free appetizer. To get the voucher, candidates need to attend an in-person interview at an Applebee’s restaurant on that day.

Starting positions include both full-time and part-time opportunities, including host, to go, server, bartender, cook, dishwasher and management. Interested candidates can visit applebees.com/careers to see a list of current job openings near them and schedule an interview for May 17 at their local restaurant.

Applicants will visit the restaurant on that date to interview and meet with an Applebee’s manager, and same-day walk-ins are also welcome.

Applebee’s has 6 locations in Connecticut, in Danbury, Groton, Orange, Plainville, Torrington and Willimantic. Listed open positions for cooks at those restaurants also include a $200 incentive, with $50 paid after the first week and a $150 retention bonus after 90 days.

Mohegan Sun also recently offered $2,000 signing bonuses for culinary positions, as the Uncasville resort casino held a two-day job fair to fill roles across all departments.

Restaurants around Connecticut are looking for help for every role in the restaurant operation — hosts, servers, bartenders, cooks, dishwashers, bussers — and coming up short, as they face a small labor pool and a lot of competition.

In recent weeks, other Connecticut restaurant groups have offered sign-on bonuses to attract staff, including the Hartford-based Max Restaurant Group, which has 11 restaurants in central Connecticut, western Massachusetts and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
