Beginner Bridge

A beginning bridge class is offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays at the Greenwich YMCA with the Perfectly Polite Beginner Bridge group. No knowledge of bridge is required. YMCA members pay $30, nonmembers pay $35 per class. Preregistr­ation by phone is required before 6 p.m. Mondays. Players must show COVID-19 vaccinatio­n cards. Masks required. Food donations

The Parish of St. Catherine of Siena and St. Agnes accepts food donations for Neighbor to Neighbor from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays in its parking area at 4 Riverside Ave. Items needed include peanut butter and jelly, oatmeal, canned meat, tuna, canned fruit, dried or canned beans, cereal, rice and soup as well as household cleaners and toiletries. St Paul's Episcopal Church at 200 Riverside Ave. accepts donations from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays for the food pantry.

COVID complicati­ons

Greenwich Hospital’s Dr. Paul Lleva, a neurologis­t, will discuss “Neurologic­al Complicati­ons of COVID-19” from 5 to 6 p.m. Nov. 16 via Zoom. Some patients experience neurologic­al complicati­ons following COVID-19 infection, during the active infection phase and sometimes afterward. Gift boutique

The Breast Cancer Alliance will hold its Holiday Gift Boutique takes on Nov. 16 and Nov. 17 at Burning Tree Country Club on Perkins Road in Greenwich. The event, which takes place from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, will feature jewelry, home goods, fashion and more. Admission of $20 is suggested at the door. Speakers at Retired Men’s group

The Greenwich Retired Men’s Associatio­n offers a free speakers program Wednesdays in the Fellowship Hall at the First Presbyteri­an Church, 1 W. Putnam Ave. It is open to the public. Talk on Twachtman

Independen­t art historian and curator Lisa Peters will give a free talk about Impression­ist painter John Henry Twachtman on Zoom from 6 to 7 p.m. Nov. 18. The lecture will celebrate the launch of a new digital resource that compiles records of his oeuvre, life, exhibition­s and other material, including his correspond­ence and all of his artwork, called “John Henry Twachtman Catalogue Raisonné.” The virtual evening, hosted by the Greenwich Historical Society, is called “Twachtman’s Road to Greenwich.” Peters will be joined by Maggie Dimock, curator of exhibition­s and collection­s, to discuss Twachtman’s legacy. Evening with the curator

The Bruce Museum will host a “A Special Evening with the Curator” from 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 18. Guest curator Kirsten J. Reinhardt will discuss how the beaver fur hat, a fashion accessory popular in Europe and North America for 300 years, was the direct catalyst for cultural and geographic changes to the lifeways of the Native Nations of North America. A key aspect of the story is the way in which select objects came to be in the stewardshi­p of the Bruce Museum. The talk will touch on Native artists and the scientists, soldiers, and social debs who collected Native Nations art and thus preserved it for future generation­s. There will be a question-and-discussion session. Reinhardt is the guest curator of the exhibition Resolute: Native Nations Art in the Bruce Museum Collection. Free for members. AuthorsLiv­e event

The Greenwich Library will welcome novelist Douglas Stuart to an AuthorsLiv­e event at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 in its Berkley Theater. Stuart will join in a conversati­on with Barbara Hoffert of Library Journal about his awardwinni­ng debut novel “Shuggie Bain.” Free, but registrati­on at GreenwichL­ibrary.org is recommende­d. Scoop on sugar

Greenwich Hospital’s Denise Addorisio, a registered dietitian, will discuss “Added Sugars 101: Get the Scoop to Kick the Habit” from 6 to 7 p.m. Nov. 18 via Zoom. Too much sugar added to your diet can lead to increased risk of weight gain, diabetes, inflammati­on, fatty liver disease and heart disease. Old Timers awards

The Greenwich Old Timers Athletic Associatio­n’s 60th annual Awards Dinner takes place on Nov. 18 at the Stamford Hilton. The event, which honors national and local athletes, will feature an open bar cocktail reception, sports raffle and silent auction. This year’s national honorees are two-time Super Bowl Champion and XXV MVP Ottis Anderson and 2004 Stanley Cup Champion and Hockey Hall of Famer Martin St. Louis. Greenwich Symphony

Adventure talks

Christ Church Greenwich at 254 E. Putnam Ave. will host two talks by Jennifer Pharr Davis, National Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year, on Nov. 21. In the first talk at 11:15 a.m. in the Parish Hall, she will speak on “A Cry in the Desert,” about how her five-month journey shaped her life, faith and worldview. At 5 p.m., she will take part in a lecture, book signing and reception on “Faith & The Outdoors: Hearing a Voice in the Wilderness” at Dogwood Books and Gifts. She is an adventurer, author, speaker and entreprene­ur who has hiked over 14,000 miles on six continents. Pain in the neck

Greenwich Hospital’s Dr. Jawad Rashid, a pain management specialist, will discuss “Neck and Lower Back Pain: Holistic Treatments” from noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 23 via Zoom. Chronic pain sufferers are at greater risk for increased pain during the pandemic due to the interplay between pain, anxiety and depression. Turkey trot

Registrati­on is open for the Greenwich Alliance for Education‘s 11th annual Turkey Trot on Saturday, Nov. 27. The largest community event of the Thanksgivi­ng weekend, the race’s proceeds support Alliance programs that benefit Greenwich Public School students and teachers. Registrati­on is $30 for adults and $15 for children ages 13 and younger. The fee will increase Nov. 1 and again on race day.
