STAMFORD — Organic-focused grocery chain Whole Foods will open a new location in Stamford.

A spokesperson for the chain, which was acquired by Amazon in 2017, confirmed to Hearst Connecticut Media that “that a Stamford store is in development.” The spokesperson declined to list a location to the upcoming store.

Whole Foods operates locations in nearby Greenwich and Darien. Data company ScrapeHero estimates that there are 514 Whole Foods stores across the country across 44 states and 353 cities.

And from a real estate perspective, the chain famously picks very specific locations for its storefronts in an attempt to serve very specific clients.

The Whole Foods website specifies that “good” perspective locations are home to a “large number of collegeeducated residents.” Business Insider reported in February that “Whole Foods' typical shopper is a West Coast millennial woman between 25 and 34 years old.” This patron “typically has a graduate degree and an annual income of more than $80,000,” according to analytics firm Numerator.

Bu beyond clientele, the Whole Foods website stipulates that locations should serve “200,000 people or more in a 20-minute drive time,” be about “25,000 to 50,000 square feet” and have “abundant parking available for its exclusive use.”

The company writes that it prefers stand-alone locations with easy access from roadways and “excellent visibility.” Perspective stores “must be located in a high traffic area.”

When asked for comment on the pending arrival, Mayor Caroline Simmons's office declined to comment.
