Local players score above average in New York

- STEVE BECKER

As the summer heat continues, local bridge players continue to make their marks.

In a duplicate game held at the Hartes’ Club in White Plains, N.Y., on Thursday, Aug. 4, two Greenwich players placed third overall, one playing NorthSouth and the other East-West. Kathryn Payne, who partnered with Kay Schulle, were able to finish third among the NorthSouth players, and Vivian Wu, partnered by Jill Marshall, took third East-West.

Several Greenwich players who play regularly at the Bridge Deck, also in White Plains, finished over average there in games during the past week, but none of them placed in the overall rankings.

Today’s quiz: Here is the last in the current series of review quizzes on forcing and nonforcing bids. In each of the following cases, simply decide whether the statement given is true or false.

1. A jump-raise of an overcaller’s suit can be passed.

2. A jump response to a takeout double forces the opener to bid again.

3. A new suit bid by the partner of an overcaller at the oneor two-level forces the overcaller to bid again.

Answers:

1. True. Depending on partnership agreement, the jump raise of an overcall is either invitational or preemptive. In neither case is the overcaller required to bid again.

2. False. A jump response to a takeout double merely invites the doubler to continue bidding with better than a minimum; if the doubler’s partner feels that his hand will produce a good play for game opposite a minimum double, he must either jump to game in his best suit (or notrump), or force partner to continue bidding by cue-bidding the opponent’s suit.

3. False. The bid of a new suit by the overcaller’s partner at the one- or two-level is a form of “rescue bid,” showing a strong five-card or longer suit and implying lack of support for the overcaller’s suit. Some play that if the new suit is bid at the three-level, it is forcing for one round.
