Bette Ellen Sargeant

Bette Ellen Sargeant passed away unexpectedly on February 9, 2023 at the age of 82.

Bette was born in Brooklyn, NY. Several years later the family moved to Riverside, Connecticut. She attended the Greenwich Public Schools followed by Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT where she received a degree in early elementary education.

Bette taught kindergarten for 42 years in the Stamford Public Schools where she worked at various schools in the district and retired from Davenport Elementary School. Teaching was a true passion for her and she loved her students. Once Bette retired, she realized how much she missed working with children. In 2005 she decided to begin working on the Stamford Bookmobile and continued to do so until her death. This enabled her to do what she loved, reading and working with children.

Bette loved to garden, travel and spend time with friends and family. She also enjoyed skiing, sailing and was a member of the Old Greenwich Yacht Club. If you couldn’t find Bette in her garden or on the bookmobile she was often at Jazzercise or playing bridge. The few times Bette actually sat down to “relax” she would most likely be crocheting or knitting. Most of all, she loved to spend time with her great niece and nephew.

Bette leaves behind her sister Susan Wold (Steve), her niece Amy Green ( Jake), her great nephew (Lucas), her great niece (Allie) and numerous cousins. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews from her husband’s family. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Sargeant, her sister Carolyn Koch and her parents Harry and Eleanor Richards.

Friends and family are invited to gather at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street, Greenwich, CT from 10:45 am to 12:00 pm on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 to memorialize Bette’s life. Words of Remembrance will be shared at 11:15am.
