TARPON TANGO May 3 “Ding” Darling & Doc Ford’s Tarpon Tournament, Sanibel Island
Call it the hottest competition on the water, the “Ding” Darling & Doc Ford’s Tarpon Tournament is a battle with the Silver King. Teams of anglers compete for the first place honor of wearing the exclusive “tarpon jacket,” a pink sports jacket swimming with tarpons. Cash awards could total $25,000. The tourney, which takes place in the waters surrounding Sanibel and Captiva islands, celebrates the first documented tarpon caught on a rod and reel in “Ding” Darling’s Tarpon Bay back in 1885. dingdarlingsociety.org

WATERCOLOR ARTISTS May 3-30 Moving Toward Abstract, Fort Myers
The JoAnn LaPadula & Sue Pink: Moving Toward Abstract exhibition features artwork with a focus on watercolors. LaPadula describes herself as a “colorful” abstract/realist and several of her paintings feature underwater scenes. The main elements in Pink’s work are color and texture along with her signature muted palette. The exhibition is at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in downtown Fort Myers. sbdac.com
CLASSICAL & POP May 4 Beethoven v. Coldplay, Fort Myers
Catch this end-of-season performance by the Southwest Florida Symphony. Beethoven v. Coldplay is a powerful production by the energetic composer Steve Hackman. He weaves Coldplay’s lyrics and melodies into the symphony via a trio of miked vocal soloists, combining the musical strands to provide a kind of dialogue and commentary on Beethoven’s original score. READY, SET, GO May 11 Great Dock Canoe Race, Naples
The 43rd annual Great Dock Canoe Race’s theme this year is Heroes and Villains. A prize is awarded for the best theme interpretation, and a parade of decorated canoes delights the rowdy spectators who drink, hoot and holler as they cheer on the competitors paddling the 3-mile course through Naples Bay.
