Affordable adult classes at local schools

-

Some people want to learn a new language or a new hobby. Others want to brush up on their computer skills or take fitness classes. Still others want to become CPR certified or pass their citizenship test.

They can do all these things and much more through the Lifelong Learning program run by the School District of Lee County. “The classes offered through Lifelong Learning truly offer something for everyone,” says Ann Burnett, who is in charge of the program.

There are five different sessions throughout the year, plus a special short session in December, each offering a variety of topics. Some of the most popular are Pottery, BBQ Smoking, QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, Spanish 1A and Conversational Italian.

The 2019 fall session is offering 60 different classes, including Conversational Mandarin Chinese; Conversational Creole; Italian Levels 1, 2, 3; Cybersecurity/ Parental Controls; Cooking: Quick, Easy, Delicious; Sumi-e Ink Wash Painting; Flight Simulator; Private Pilot Ground School; Community Band; and History: The Civil War.

“In January, we are excited to bring AutoCAD, computer-aided drafting, into our mix of classes,” says Burnett, who adds that new subjects are always being suggested and developed.

The Lifelong Learning classes are held in eight different locations around Lee County: Bonita Springs High School, Camp Felice, Cape Coral High School, Cypress Lake High School, Dunbar Community School, East Lee County High School, Lee County Public Education Center and Lehigh Senior High School.

Typically, the classes range in size from 8 to 25 students, and most of the six-week sessions cost only $53 for 12 hours of instruction; some classes may also require textbooks and supplies. Still, the total cost falls below typical market value.

“Classes fill up quickly, so if interested, register today,” urges Burnett.
