GUYMON - The Guymon High School football team and coaches are trying something different from here on out; they have come up with a new leadership council this year. The goal of the leadership council is to define the core values that will help them create a championship culture in Guymon and especially with the football team. They chose several key words and have the students discuss how those words are important in life, school and football. The leadership program will cover all of the football athletes from 7th to 12th grade.

For example, they have focused so far on the theme “Tigers have CLAWS.” “C” for compete, “A” for arrive, “W” for work and “S” for succeed. All student athletes from all levels will be familiar with the values they choose, and they will be able to define the values and how they apply to their own personal life.

The students in the leadership council will understand the importance of football being a year-round pursuit. Josh Smith was the assistant coach for the Guymon High School football team and has now stepped into the interim head coach position. Smith mentioned, “We have to work harder than our opponents for the next nine months in the offseason just to compete during the three month season.” Once the leadership materials are created by the council and being taught from the younger guys up, people should hear them all the time around the school’s facilities. “You will hear us preaching competition in everything, it won’t matter if it is in the offseason in January or a big district game in October,” Smith said.

The leadership council is the starting point for all of the championship-level culture change they are looking to create. Smith also said, “These young men are determining and defining a set of values that will create a daily urgency for all of our athletes to strive to be their best, and leads into the main reason for the council.”
