Oklahoma Highway Patrol investigating fatal pursuit

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating after several subjects in a vehicle failed to stop for a trooper, leading him on a pursuit that ultimately resulted in the death of one of the subjects.

The pursuit began around 3:50 Wednesday morning when the trooper ran the license plate of the vehicle in the area of I-240 and Penn in Oklahoma City. The check showed the license plate to be reported stolen. The trooper activated his emergency lights but the subjects did not pull over, instead leading the trooper on a pursuit.

The pursuit proceeded onto city streets and at one point the vehicle crashed through the chain link fence of the football field at Jefferson Middle School and drove around the track before exiting back out.

The pursuit then

went south on Western before the vehicle turned west onto SW 119th. The trooper initiated a tactical vehicle intervention approximately 1.5 miles east of I-44 on SW 119th. The vehicle rolled and two of the three occupants were ejected. One of the occupants was pronounced deceased while the other two were transported to a local hospital. The entire pursuit lasted less than 10 minutes.

Two of the occupants were juveniles, including the deceased.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troop Z (Investigations) as well as the Traffic Homicide Unit will be conducting an investigation into the incident. The trooper involved has been placed on routine administrative leave.
