Dunaway Manor/Heritage Community updates

- By Dan Stiles, Campus Director

February has been very busy at Dunaway Manor and Heritage Community. Our neighbors have had a lot of fun, even with the week-long cold snap and snow.

February 12, we held our Valentines Day Parties in both the Manor and the Heritage. The Life Enrichment Team worked hard to on the decorations, and the treats that were served at the party. We had melted white and dark chocolate, with marshmallow’s, fresh cut pineapple, strawberries and pretzel sticks to dunk in the melted chocolate. We also had cookies and punch. The neighbors all had a grand time. Some of the neighbors in the Heritage even had some dancing to some old love classics. In the Manor Roy Thompson was voted as King, and Lois Boston was the Queen.

February 16, we celebrated Mardi Gras in both building with some King Cake and Shirley Temple’s to drink. Everyone also enjoyed playing Mardi Gras trivia, and listening to some authentic New Orleans Jazz music.

Dunaway and Heritage were the recipients of a grant which allowed us to get several large IPads that are being used in both building for games, Face Time with

families, and they interface with our TV’s in the activity areas, so the I-Pads are being used to call Bingo for the neighbors. Learning how to use them has been a lot of fun and adventure for our neighbors and our team.

With Texas County going green on the CMS and OSDH COVID grids, we were able to begin limited visitation on Friday, Saturday and Sundays in both the Manor and the Heritage on February 19. It was great to see our neighbors with their families. We are hoping and praying that the COVID numbers in Texas County stay down, and that we will be able to open to more visitation in the very near future. We are also now able to allow pastors in to conduct services, and very soon we hope to have Cosmetologists able to come in and use the Beauty Shop. For more information on the Visitation and the rules that we are required to follow, contact Dan Stiles or Janessa Kelley at 580-338-3186.

We began receiving COVID vaccines the end of December and after our final clinic March 1, 2021 we will have 98% of our neighbors vaccinated and almost

80% of our team members. Through a partnership between OSDH, CMS and Walgreen’s pharmacies we received the Pfizer vaccine and are happy to report that we had no adverse effects in any of our neighbors or team members that received the vaccine.

We want to thank two anonymous donors that gave us money to be used to update the South Hall of the Manor. All of the rooms, hallways, bathrooms and common areas are being totally repainted, and new windows are going to be installed in all the rooms. Once the work is done on South Hall, it is our hope to be able to move everyone from East Hall to South Hall and then do some much-needed updates to East Hall. Speaking of donations, we often get asked what are some projects that Dunaway/Heritage could use some help with. So here is a list and approximate prices of some things we hope to do.

East Hall-New paint, new windows, and other updates-$16,400.00

Mini-Split Heat and Air Units in East Hall and South Hall$78,000.00

New Steamer for the Kitchen-$8500.00

Drink station and ice machine in the main Dining Room$12,000.00

Commercial Sink, garbage disposal and dishwasher in Memory Care-$11,000.00

Commercial Garbage Disposal in Heritage-$5000.00

Updates to the Heritage Dining Room and Activity Room$8000.00

New 12 passenger, wheelchair accessible bus-$75,000.00

If you would like more information on any of these projects or how to donate to us feel free to contact Dan Stiles at 580-338-3186.

With spring coming we are working on what to plant in our gardens this year, I am sure we will grow tomatoes, squash and cucumbers and are working on finding an area outdoors to put in a blackberry patch. If you would like to help us with supplies, plants, or seeds, please let us know.

We also want to thank Tractor Supply here in Guymon for helping us provide the neighbors in the Manor, Heritage and Memory Care with over 100 daffodil, tulip and crocus bulbs that they planted both outside the community and inside the community in flower pots. The inside bulbs in big flower pots are starting to come up, and we hope they will bloom by the middle of March.

In March we have plans to celebrate St.

Patrick’s Day, the first day of spring, and prepare ourselves for the celebration of Easter. Beyond March we are looking forward to Easter, getting to do more outside activities, and of course like the rest of the community we are excited for the OPSU College Rodeo and Pioneer Days!

We are of course hoping that COVID continues to decrease in Texas County so that OSDH and CMS will continue to allow us to open up to more visitors and to let more volunteers and community members come in and be a part of our activities and celebrations.
