Texhoma High School Student Council receives a state Gold Chapter award despite year of COVID.

- Special to the Herald

On November 8th, the Texhoma High School Student Council was honored at the 81st annual OASC State Convention at Del City High School as a State Gold Council. To be selected as a Gold Council, a student council must complete a series of different activities or projects throughout a year including school service, community service, and social projects. Schools also receive points for their involvement in the district, state, and national organizations for student councils. At first, Texhoma Student Council Advisor Ty McBride did not believe that the council could qualify due to many of the council's annual events being cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns and restrictions. However, when it was announced by the Oklahoma Association of Student Councils that the required amount of points needed to be a Gold Council would be lowered to reflect the difficulties caused by COVID, the Texhoma Student Council came together and discovered that they had indeed qualified. "This award really belongs to the hardworking individuals of the student council" commented Ty McBride on the award, "The reason we received this award was because they saw the need to step up and help out our school and community during a year of need, and now they are being honored for that." This is the 4th time in 5 years that Texhoma Student Council has received the Gold Council award with the exception being the 2020 school year when the complete shutdown of schools and summer activities caused the council to fall short of their goal. Two other schools, Alva and Laverne, from OASC District 11, which covers all of the Panhandle and Northwest Oklahoma, were also selected as Gold Councils.
