Mental Health: Emotional well being matters

- By DUSTIN POPE Special to the Herald

The topic of mental health is usually a very tricking sometimes even hard subject to talk about. It can be hard for someone to admit they may be depressed or maybe going through a tough time. The fact of the matter is most of us will deal with some sort of mental health issue at some point in our life. Life can be difficult at times, we all can go through the ups and downs of everyday living. Sometimes its just a lot to deal with and we may not know how or the right way to deal with life's problems.

Thats why speaking up when you are struggling is so important. So many times people are embarrassed that they may be depressed. Or maybe your dealing with something way beyond depression, maybe its a addiction that you cant shake. Whatever you are going through it is ok to talk to someone. Let anyone who will listen know whats gong on. Because when you don't speak up and talk about what your problems are then a lot of the time they can just get worse. There is absolutely no thing to be ashamed of when it comes to your mental health. So many people in this world just stay silent, and don't speak up when they need to the most. This can lead to a very dangerous game. Mental Health is no joking matter. How we feel and how we deal with those feelings is so very important. This life is way to short and precious to throw away over being to prideful to admit when you have a problem.

Over the last few years the topic of mental health and well being has been more prevalent. There are many athletes and actors who have admitted there struggles with addiction, and of course being depressed. A lot of people wonder how these stars could even be depressed, I mean they have everything they could ever want right? Well guess what they are human

just like me and you, and they also live lives that we don't see. Some of these athletes and actors have the spotlight to let there problems be known, so maybe there story will get out and someone else will reach out for help. That is exactly what Simone Biles did at the Tokyo Olympics. As hard as it had to be for her with the whole world watching, she took a step back and she put her mental health first. She knew she wasn't ok, and she needed support. This is a prime example of what a true champion looks like, she came out in front of the biggest stage in the world and asked for help. If everyone who had problems did this then we would be making great strides in the direction of learning more about how to deal with our emotional issues. Listen you may not be Simone Biles but if you are reading this then im assuming you are human, and we are all prone to having problems, no matter how much we want to be we are not perfect. It is not a sign of weakness its a sign of being a strong willed person to speak up.

Since Simone Biles has stood up for Mental Health we have seen a drastic shift to how we the public are reacting to the situation. More and more people are coming forward admitting that they are struggling or having problems. Sometimes all it takes is a frontrunner,a nd maybe that is exactly what biles is. She was one of the first and wont be the last. The more education is out there about mental health the better off we will all be. Biles was not the first person to ever speak up about this issues, but being she did it at one of the biggest stages of all time, it has had more impact then most. Now that she spoke up there has been a lot of other celebrities talk about their issues as well. Im sure it has opened the door for a lot of us to feel more comfortable speaking about the tough subject.

I dealt with a lot of issues myself for a very long time, and just kept quite about it, because I was embarrassed that I felt depressed. Ill admit that I wasn't strong enough to admit that I had a problem. I was in denial, and im telling you from experience that thats not the right thing to do to yourself. I spent years of my life struggling, when if I would have just been man enough to admit I was struggling with my feelings I could have had peace long before I revived it.

We live in tough times, no matter who you are or how perfect you may think your life is, we all have problems that we have to deal with on a daily basis. If you or somebody you know is struggling with mental health issues please reach out and get the help you need it is there for us to use.
