WOODWARD --The Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball team dropped their doubleheader against the Division II Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm.

A difficult day for the Aggies as the elements got the best of them during key parts of the series. “We didn’t take advantage of the opportunity to play today. We didn’t compete”, Head Coach Shawn Joy would comment.

The first game of the day saw the Crimson Storm taking advantage of a lax Aggie defense in the third inning to score all they needed to win the game. The Aggie bats just were not able to get back into the game.

Game two saw much more life from the Aggie offense early in the contest but it would not last for long. As the Crimson Storm would force the Aggies to get them out and they would be unable to do so.

Game 1

Freshman Tate Nebhut would notch the game one start against the Crimson Storm. Making it through two and two-thirds innings before handing the ball off to Corbin Yandell. Yandell would make light work of Southern Nazarene through his three and a third innings of work. Allowing only two baserunners in his outing.

Although the pitching put an end to any momentum from the Crimson Storm the Aggie bats would still be unable to get into the game in full force. Managing only four hits in the contest.

Game 2

Junior RHP Joaquin Carlos started on the mound in game two. Carlos would not fare as well as Nebhut in game one and faced eight batters in his one inning of work. Surrendering three runs on four hits.

The Aggies would make extensive use of their bullpen after Carlos’s exit. Using four more pitchers in the contest. Corbin Bailey, Brandon Rodriguez, Jostynn Mieses, and Carl McKenzie would each see time on the mound.

Unlike in game one, the Aggie bats came out with an approach. Senior center fielder lead the game off with a single through the left side of the infield. Very quickly moving into scoring position by stealing second base.

The pair of freshman, Hunter Hutchinson and Dylan Hughs got the Aggies on the board first with a couple of batted balls to score both Hunt and Applebury.

The Crimson Storm would answer right back in the bottom half of the first, leaving the rest up to the Aggies in the top of the second. Momentum looked to be swinging in the favor of the Crimson Storm as the Aggies quickly got down to two outs in the inning. However, Hunt would come up big with a two-out hit to get runners in scoring position for Luis Dermas and Jonathan Applebury.

Dermas and Applebury evened the score up with RBI singles.

Unable to answer in the bottom of the second, the Aggies held all the momentum heading into the third. Southern Nazarene was keen on completing the sweep in the doubleheader. Scoring in each of the next four innings while simultaneously keeping the Aggies off the scoreboard. Errors and quick innings handcuffed the Aggies throughout the contest.

Panhandle State heads back to Carroll Gribble Field for its last conference series of the regular season Friday against the Oklahoma City Stars.
