Late ‘Goldbergs’ actor’s final episode to air soon
“The Goldbergs” paid a special tribute to cast member George Segal, who died last week at 87 after complications from bypass surgery.
The veteran actor played Albert “Pops” Solomon, the World War II vet and ladies’ man father of Wendi McLendon-Covey’s Beverly Goldberg, on the hit ABC sitcom. The March 24 episode ended with a photo of a Segal smiling, wearing a baseball shirt decorated with the word “Pops” on it. A title card read “In Memoriam 1934-2021.”
Segal’s final episode of the show filmed before his death and is set to air April 7. The Oscar-nominated actor played such an integral role on the ’80s-set sitcom, and sources say it’s possible his death will be addressed in the show, but that has yet to be confirmed.
“He was kind, sweet, beyond talented and funny,” the show’s cast noted in a statement released Wednesday, calling the “national treasure” the “true epitome of class and he touched all of our lives so deeply.” They collectively said it was “an honor and a privilege to have him as a colleague and friend all of these years.”
A prominent movie actor during the 1960s and 1970, Segal was nominated for an
Academy Award in 1967 for his role in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” opposite Elizabeth Taylor. Some of his more notable films during that time period include “The Hot Rock” and “A Touch of Class.”
A two-time Golden Globe Award winner, he also starred in several ’90s hits, such as “Look Who’s Talking Now,” “The Cable Guy,” and had recurring roles on television in “Murphy’s Law,” “Just Shoot Me!” and “Take Five.”
