MONTAUK’S RESIDENT SHUTTERBUG MICHAEL DWEC CAPTURES SUMMER IN A BOTTLE WITH A NEW LINE OF ROSÉ.
Montauk’s resident shutterbug Michael Dweck captures summer in a bottle with a new line of rosé.
Since heading to Montauk in 1975 in pursuit of the Rolling Stones’ famous summer soirée at Andy Warhol’s house, photographer Michael Dweck has been enchanted by the East End. His latest venture is a new wine in partnership with Montauk Wine Company.
Tell us about the new Montauk Summer Rosé. MD: I’ve always enjoyed wine and thought it would be interesting to create a rosé that reminded me of Montauk—a place that has youthfulness and sensuality. The limited production is a Syrah blend with hand-selected grapes from the North Shore, and is similar to a dry French rosé in style. What was your inspiration for the label? MD: I wanted it to look like a faded Polaroid had been slapped on the bottle with handwritten text. The image is titled Getting Wet, and I took it at Ditch Plains Beach in 2002. We wanted to evoke the idea that summer is fleeting and continually reinvented. Beyond the wine release, do you have other projects in the works? MD: I’m in postproduction for a feature film documentary I directed, titled Blunderbust, about the fate of a stock-car racetrack in Riverhead, Long Island. We’ll be entering it in film festivals this summer. When you’re not working, where are some of your favorite Montauk spots to unwind? MD: I’m a big fish eater, and Gosman’s Dock is the best there is.
