Damned Either Way

- John N Michaels, Newington

President Donald J. Trump and the late Arizona Sen. John McCain did not like each other. McCain asked that Trump not be allowed at his funeral. Trump was ridiculed for not going [courant.com, Aug. 29, “Analysis: Trump Often Unwelcome And Unwilling To Perform Basic Rituals Of The Office”]. Can this commander in chief do anything right?

It amazes me that this country is so bent on criticism that it forgets all the good that this president has done since entering office. Sure, his table manners suck, and as far as being presidential-like, he gets an F, but the promises he made are the promises he kept — so far anyway. Unemployment is down, taxes are down, companies are therefore hiring, people have more money and therefore people are spending. Isn’t this what we wanted?

Smear campaigns all have one thing in common: They become a bigger part of the problem and less about the solution. Trump is part of the solution, whether you like it or not. Special counsel probes? Who cares? Will they change anything? No. Will things stay the same? Yes. Have we been here before? Can anyone say “Bill Clinton”?

New York Mayor LaGuardia once said (according to the movie “City Hall”), “Why is it that every time you can do something good, the nice people come in and mess you up?” Maybe it’s because you’re damned if do and you’re damned if you don’t.
