Temple Upsets Maryland 35-14

Temple stuffed Maryland’s potent offense, Anthony Russo threw for 228 yards and the Owls pulled off a 35-14 upset Saturday at College Park, Md., for their first victory of the season.

Ryquell Armstead rushed for 118 yards to help Temple (1-2) bounce back from losses at home to Villanova and Buffalo. The Owls were a 16-point underdog.

The Terrapins (2-1) were averaging 39.5 points and 486 yards per game after rolling past Texas and Bowling Green, but nothing seemed to work against Temple.

The Owls dared Maryland to pass by drawing their safeties close to the line of scrimmage to bottle up the run. The Terrapins tried to throw long but failed.

Maryland quarterbac­k Kasim Hill went 7 of 17 for 56 yards, and backup Tyrrell Pigrome was 1 of 4 for 7 yards.

In other games: At Ann Arbor, Mich., Shea Patterson threw three touchdown passes to Donovan PeoplesJon­es, helping No. 19 Michigan pull away and defeat SMU 45-20. The Wolverines (2-1) didn’t score until Ben Mason converted a fourth down with a 1-yard TD run midway through the second quarter. The Mustangs (0-3) responded with Ben Hicks’ 50-yard pass to James Proche to tie it. Michigan took control over the last 2:34 of the first half. ... At Birmingham, Ala., A .J. Erdely threw his only touchdown pass of the day with just over two minutes to play, finding Logan Scott for the winning score in UAB’s 31-24 victory over Tulane. The teams were tied at 24 following a Tulane field goal earlier in the fourth when Erdely capped a 13-play, 93-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown throw to Scott for the lead with 2:19 left. ... At Annapolis, Md., quarterbac­k Malcolm Perry ran for 223 yards with three touchdowns and Navy renewed its rivalry with Lehigh with a 51-21 win. Perry spent the afternoon dodging and spinning around defenders in the Midshipmen’s triple-option offense that amassed 629 total yards. ... At Chicago, Blake Barnett threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to Darnell Salomon as South Florida rallied from a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Illinois 25-19. Barnett was 23 of 40 for 411 yards passing with two touchdowns and two intercepti­ons, and Jordan Cronkrite ran for 136 yards and a score for the Bulls (3-0). ... Texas Tech true freshman quarterbac­k Alan Bowman threw for 605 yards with five touchdowns and the Red Raiders beat Houston 63-49 at Lubbock, Texas. Three of those scores went to Antoine Wesley, who set a school record with 261 yards receiving. Bowman finished 43of-59 passing for the fifth 600-yard game in Texas Tech history. It’s the Big 12 single-game record for a freshman. ... Desmond Ridder threw three touchdowns and the Bearcats (3-0) scored on their first six possession­s to topple Alabama A&M 63-7 at Cincin- nati. Khalill Lewis, Josiah Deguara and Thomas Geddis caught touchdown passes from Ridder of 61, 22 and 29 yards, respective­ly. ... Demari Medley picked off a Luke Skipper pass and returned it 53 yards for a touchdown as Arkansas State held off Tulsa to earn a 29-20 victory at Tulsa, Okla. The Red Wolves put up 415 yards of offense.
