Trump’s body count

-

Donald Trump is the first president with a traceable body count.

He tweets about the dangers of immigrants at the border, and one of his followers kills 23 people at a Wal-Mart in El Paso in August 2019. He declares journalists enemies of the people, and a gunman storms into an Annapolis newsroom and kills five people in June 2018. And now he has sparked and stoked the powerful flames of authoritarianism that have overtaken the cries for social justice, and two people are dead at the hands of a Trump militia member.

I can no longer laugh at Donald Trump’s ineptitude. He is dangerous. I am afraid of what he will tweet about next and whom will receive the tweet as a call to action.

The American carnage Trump spoke of at his inauguration was foreshadowing what was to come not a reflection of what was. We were so busy laughing at his ridiculous exaggeration of crowd size that we missed his doomsday prophesies.

We must remember that there was once light and joy in America. In the days before Trump, the issue that made conservatives angry at the president was the fact that President Barack Obama wanted to make sure that sick people, regardless of employment status, could afford to see their doctor. I wish we still had the ease to worry about something so helpful.

I’m praying that we all vote for a higher level of human compassion in November and that the love for each other overcomes the fear of the other that has become Trump’s America.
