A’s, Rangers: All-Star 3B Matt Chapman likely will miss the rest of the season because of a strained right hip. Chapman was placed on the 10-day IL on Saturday, two days before he’s scheduled to undergo surgery. Chapman hasn’t played since leaving hurt in the fifth inning of AL West leaders’ game Sept. 6 against the Padres. He was a first-time All-Star last season, when he won a Gold Glove for the second year in a row. In 37 games this season, Chapman hit .232 with 10 HRs with 25 RBIs. He hit only .120 (3-for-25) with 17 strikeouts and one walk his last eight games. ... Rougned Odor and Ronald Guzman homered in a five-run first for the Rangers, who beat the A’s 5-2 in the first game of a doubleheader to spoil the major league debut of Daulton Jefferies. Rangers rookie LHP Wes Benjamin (1-0) worked four innings for his first big league victory, coming in his fifth game. He struck out four and walked one while allowing two runs after Nick Goody retired the first three batters as an opener. Rafael Montero worked a perfect seventh for his eight save in as many tries this season, though it was the right-handed closer’s first since Sept. 1. Jefferies (0-1), a 25-year-old RHP who had never pitched above the Double-A level, was called up to be the 29th player for the A’s in the doubleheader. He threw 53 pitches over two innings, allowing the five runs on five hits, with one strikeout and two walks. Rays: Brandon Lowe and Austin Meadows homered and the AL East-leading and Rays beat the last-place and visiting Red Sox 5-4. Lowe hit a solo shot, his 12th HR of the season, off Marcus Walden (0-2) in the seventh for a 5-4 lead. Tyler Glasnow (3-1) allowed four runs and six hits over seven innings for the Rays, who improved to a combined 15-4 against the Red Sox and the Yankees. Braves: Rookie Ian Anderson allowed one hit over seven scoreless innings and the NL East-leading Braves held on to beat the host Nationals 2-1 after closer Mark Melancon escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth. In his fourth career start, Anderson (3-0) allowed his only hit when Asdrubal Cabrera put a bunt down the third baseline. Anderson had a season-high nine strikeouts, allowed three walks and retired the final 12 batters he faced. Melancon earned his 10th save in 11 chances, getting Victor Robles to pop out to right field with the bases loaded. Extra innings: Twins reliever Sergio Romo was suspended one game by MLB for jawing with Indians star Francisco Lindor. Romo and Lindor also were fined for the incident, which occurred during the Twins’ 3-1 victory Friday. Romo worked a perfect eighth, retiring Lindor on an inning-ending flyout. Romo and Lindor exchanged words as the shortstop ran toward first, and then the two walked toward each other before they were separated by teammates. ... Brewers LHP Brett Anderson was scratched from his start Saturday against the Cubs because of right hip soreness. Anderson is day to day.
